Community Impact department seeks a Sustainability Specialist. The Sustainability Specialist is responsible for supporting the development and implementation of sustainability initiatives, tracking key metrics, and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility across the organization. This position works closely with department leaders to manage sustainability-related projects, develop actionable KPIs, and ensure alignment with BGV’s sustainability goals. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES but not limited to:

Program Implementation and Coordination:

  • Provide guidance and support to departments within the organization to integrate sustainability practices into their daily operations and collaborate with department heads to align sustainability goals with company objectives.
  • Ensure all recycling efforts across properties are completed effectively, transporting materials (e.g., electronics, scrap metal, glass) to appropriate facilities like the SCRAP and various local drop sites.
  • Work closely with operations teams to support their sustainability-related projects and ensure resources are readily available for success, acting as boots-on-the-ground.
  • Research and recommend new sustainability practices, tools, and technologies.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends, regulations, and emerging technologies related to sustainability.

Data Management and Reporting:

  • Collect, track, and analyze data on waste, water, natural gas, electricity, and other sustainability metrics. This includes being the primary administrator and power user of BGV’s sustainability software and energy management platform(s).
  • Develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of sustainability programs, generating reports and presentations on sustainability progress for internal and external stakeholders.

Employee Engagement and Training:

  • Conduct sustainability training and awareness programs for employees to promote a culture of sustainability within the organization.
  • Promote employee awareness and engagement through internal communications and events, writing regular sustainability related posts or articles.
  • Deliver weekly presentations during employee orientation sessions (BGVO) to introduce and promote the company’s sustainability programs and initiatives.
  • Serve as a resource and advocate for sustainability initiatives throughout the organization.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and implement sustainable solutions in areas including but not limited to energy efficiency, waste management, sustainable transportation, and supply chain optimization.
  • Support the planning and execution of sustainability-focused events and campaigns.

Stakeholder Collaboration:

  • Work with internal and external partners, vendors, and community organizations to enhance sustainability efforts, participating in cross-functional meetings to share insights and progress updates on sustainability efforts.
  • Prepare and present reports on sustainability initiatives, progress, and outcomes to stakeholders and management.
  • Represent BGV at sustainability-related events, meetings, and conferences.
  • Assist with grant applications and external reporting related to sustainability programs.

Project Management:

  • Coordinate cross-departmental sustainability projects, ensuring timelines and deliverables are met.
  • Act as the point of contact for sustainability-related inquiries and initiatives.
  • Oversee the implementation of energy efficiency measures, waste reduction strategies, and other sustainability initiatives.
  • Manage the installation, operation, and ongoing maintenance of EV charging stations, ensuring up-to-date functionality and performance.

Compliance and Standards:

  • Monitor compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
  • Support the integration of sustainability certifications and standards (e.g., LEED, Green Globes, ENERGY STAR) into company projects and operations.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and records for audits and certifications.

Culture & Service: Uphold Hospitality Standards, Company culture and observe Company policies and procedures.

  • Exhibit and maintain confidentiality and exercise good judgment with critical and sensitive information, records, and reports.
  • Respond promptly to all email and voicemail correspondence.
  • Re-direct questions and inquiries to appropriate points of contact as needed, but aim to be the end of the line.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with all employees and vendors, always being helpful and courteous.
  • Always Adhere to Company appearance standards; dress professionally and wear name badge when required.
  • Attend, support, develop and/or conduct company training sessions and meetings; attend outside training sessions as needed.
  • Uphold Hospitality Standards, Company Culture, Department Core Standards and observe Company policies and procedures.
  • Strive to close the loop (alleviate or eliminate issues) on any situations that cannot be fully resolved.

Marginal Duties: Functions that are not considered essential to the job:

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Follow Company guidelines for environmental sustainability practices (recycling, composting and conserving resources) and participate in the Company’s initiatives.
  • Take meeting minutes for various meetings.
  • Create and track action items from meetings and follow up with team members on progress updates.
  • Schedule and facilitate meetings with various departments as needed, including leading Sustainability Champions group meetings.
Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, the candidate must meet the following qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in sustainability related field, with 1 years of experience in sustainability programs or project management preferred.
  • LEED Green Associate, Certified Sustainability Professional (CSP), or similar credentials are a plus.

Technology Skills:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and data visualization tools.
  • Possess the aptitude and interest to learn and master a variety of energy and sustainability software platforms. Familiarity with sustainability tracking software and tools preferred.
  • Ability to operate office equipment (copier, scanner, phone and calculator)
  • Must type by touch and be comfortable with search engines and navigating the internet.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and accurately record time worked, in the correct department, using the Company time-keeping system.

CERTIFICATIONS and/or LICENSES: Must pass a Motor Vehicle Record check upon hire - possess a valid US driver license and an acceptable driving record. (Include BPI and EVAC certs preferred)

LANGUAGE ABILITY: Ability to speak, read, write and interpret in English. Ability to read and interpret articles for publication, business correspondence, general business periodicals, government regulations, instructions, memos, professional journals, reports, safety rules and technical procedures. Ability to write articles for publication, business correspondence, financial reports, operating and maintenance instructions, memos, procedures and routine reports. Ability to speak effectively before groups and individuals to present information to guests, owners, other employees of the organization, outside vendors, executive leadership team, public groups and board of directors. Ability to communicate in Spanish is preferred.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as percentages, area, circumference, weight and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
