Job Description
University Counsel
The position of University Counsel provides the Church Educational System higher education institutions, including Brigham Young University (“BYU”) and Brigham Young University–Hawaii, Brigham Young University–Idaho, and Ensign College (the “other CES institutions”), with a wide range of legal services, as directed by the general counsel or the deputy general counsel.
What you’ll do in this position:
Legal Counsel
- Provide a wide range of legal services to BYU and/or the other CES institutions.
- Advise, assist and act on behalf of the general counsel in providing legal services and legal representation in diverse areas.
- As assigned by the general counsel or deputy general counsel, advise specific academic, administrative, and operational units on BYU’s campus and/or at the other CES institutions.
- As assigned by the general counsel or deputy general counsel, serve on and represent university committees.
- As assigned by the general counsel or deputy general counsel, develop an expertise in and advise BYU and/or the other CES institutions in a specialized area of law.
- As assigned by the general counsel or deputy general counsel, represent BYU and/or the other CES institutions in connection with external relations and outside organizations.
Transactional
- Negotiate, prepare and manage contracts, licenses, leases, and other legal agreements and documents.
- Coordinate complex transactions.
Litigation/Arbitration/Mediation/Investigations
- Represent BYU and/or the other CES institutions in pre-litigation and litigation matters in federal, state, and local judicial and agency courts and tribunals.
- Represent BYU and/or the other CES institutions in arbitration, mediation, and regulatory and agency investigations.
- Oversee and strategize with outside counsel.
Regulatory/Compliance/Policy/Government
- Provide legal counsel to BYU and/or the other CES institutions on the impact of federal, state, and local laws and regulations on university operations.
- Participate in the development, implementation, and interpretation of policy.
- Provide training, as appropriate, to BYU and/or the other CES institutions relating to compliance with applicable law and regulations.
- Interface with government officials and representatives on behalf of BYU and/or the other CES institutions.
What qualifies you for this role:
Required
- A firm commitment to the mission of BYU
- A J.D. from an accredited law school, admission to the Utah State Bar within one year of starting work.
- A minimum of seven years of relevant (post-law school) legal experience
- At least two years of relevant (post-law school) legal experience in higher education.
Preferred
- Strong academic credentials
- Experience working at a firm or in a complex organization
- A specialized skill set in particular areas of law are preferred.

Compensation Range
Actual compensation based on education and experience
$130,739.00 - $169,790.50Required Documents:
