POSITION TITLE: Theatre Director, Set Design and Production

DEPARTMENT: Theatre

PRIMARY LOCATION: [CHOOSE ONE]: Fall River

REPORTS TO: Vice President, Administration and Finance

Statement of Duties:

The Theatre Director will be required to execute set construction, working both independently and with volunteers. The Theatre Director should execute sets for productions, including scenic painting and set dressing. The Theatre Director will be expected to work within established and approved budgets and deadlines. The incumbent must be able to collaborate with the individuals working with other technical aspects of the show such as lights and sound in a positive and professional manner. The Theatre Director provides basic administrative and light technical support, often handling routine paperwork, data entry, preparing and processing documents, and responding to general requests for information.

Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise, delegate to and evaluate staff.
  • Maintain a climate that attracts, retains, and motivates top quality people, both professional and volunteer.
  • Work directly with staff daily on projects and strategies.
  • Provide routine feedback on performance including a formal annual review for staff.
  • Provide training for staff development needs.
  • Participate in production meetings, staff meetings and design meetings on projects.
  • Perform preventative and scheduled maintenance and inspections on all tools, line sets, rigging, equipment, and soft goods; seek outside contractors for repairs or inspections as needed.
  • Assume day-to-day fiscal management responsibility for the department.
  • Order and maintain theater supplies and expendables.
  • Oversea and manage the operations budget.
  • Demonstrate professional demeanor and discretion when working with guests and clients.
  • Works collaboratively with the Lighting Designer during the focus sessions as either the board operator or as the person focusing the units.
  • Responsible for hanging and circuiting the lighting units according to the plot.
  • Responsible for the wiring of any practical or scenic pieces that include lighting units, under the supervision of the Designer.
  • Conducts light and sound checks before every performance.
  • Hang, circuit, focus, and change the lamp in any of the lighting units.
  • Supervise a crew of carpenters/student workers in the construction of scenery and scenic elements.
  • Maintain scene shop equipment and supplies.
  • Knowledge and experience working with hand tools and power tools such as a table saw, bandsaw, radial arm saw, etc.
  • Create and maintain a production schedule for each show.
  • Maintain contact information.
  • Work closely with Directors and other department heads to ensure decisions regarding set, costume, lighting and other aspects of a production, while staying within budget.
  • Keep stage and backstage areas organized.
  • Ensure decisions made regarding the set of a production are carried out safely.
  • Prepare budgets and monitor accurate expenses.
  • Create construction drawings for all scenery elements.
  • Ensure the safety of people in and around the theater.
  • Demonstrate a sense of professionalism and consistently reflect Bristol's core values while interacting with members of the Bristol community.
  • Focus on the Commonwealth's Equity Agenda by applying related best practices throughout all job functions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:


Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in show production or another related field; minimum of one to three years of relevant experience at an event production company, orchestra, touring company or other performing arts organization; an equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered.

Additional Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated skill with theatrical lighting equipment.
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot a light board.
  • Knowledge and ability to manage wireless mics along with other sound reinforcement during a show.
  • Knowledge of sound cueing systems, such as Q-lab, is essential.
  • Basic knowledge of video projections systems, audio equipment and sound reinforcement.
  • Understanding of theatrical electrical systems and power sources.
  • General knowledge of performance and event conventions and vocabulary.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Must exhibit collaborative teamwork; applied problem-solving; ability to work effectively with coworkers of a diverse group of backgrounds and personalities.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven supervisory skills, strong communication and interpersonal skills, positive attitude, team player, collaboration skills, problem solving skills and a good sense of humor.
  • Self-motivated, organized and detail oriented.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Vectorworks software, Lightwright software, and wireless DMX preferred.
  • Proficient in Dropbox, Excel, Vectorworks, Google Docs, QlLAb, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of intelligent/moving head fixtures, and LED fixtures and systems.
  • Working knowledge of conventual, LED's and moving light systems.
  • Ability to use accessories such as color, templates, and barndoors.
  • Power and DMX distribution.
  • Primarily ETC consoles.
  • Projection/Video or Audio experience.
  • Carpentry experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work nights and/or weekends as needed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Able to move, transport, position, and remove items such as chairs, risers, boxes, tables, instruments, audio equipment, lighting instruments, cabling, and other items that may be bulky or heavy (up to 50 pounds). Ability to ascend and descend stairs and stepladders and lifts. The employee must meet the physical demands and work environment of the position. POSITION STATUS: Full-time, non-unit professional.

WORK SCHEDULE: 37.5 hours per week. Evening and weekends should be expected.

Salary range: $65,000 - 75,000 per year
