ABOUT BUILDING BRIDGES ACROSS THE RIVER
Building Bridges Across the River (Building Bridges) provides residents East of the Anacostia River access to the best-in-class facilities, programs and partnerships in arts and culture, economic opportunity, education, recreation, health and well-being. Building Bridges envisions a future in which the residents East of the Anacostia River experience vital, thriving communities characterized by social, cultural, economic, and racial equity. Building Bridges Theory of Change is to reduce structural barriers to social and economic mobility to build a more equitable city. To achieve this, Building Bridges develops and manages facilities and programs in Wards 7 and 8 including the Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus (THEARC), Building Bridges Farms, THEARC Theater, 11th Street Bridge Park, and Skyland Workforce Center. In 2005, Building Bridges first facility was THEARC at 110,000 square feet and since then, has grown to 203,000 square feet housing 14 best in class non-profits, representing the largest social service, multisector, nonprofit collaboration in the country.

ABOUT THE POSITION
The Director of Institutional Giving is responsible for managing and growing Building Bridges’ relationships with foundations and corporations as well as government agencies to provide critical funding for Building Bridges’ programs. The Director is a critical member of the Development Department and directly contributes to achieving ambitious annual fundraising goals.
Principal Responsibilities:
• The Director of Institutional Giving is responsible for expanding Building Bridges’ institutional funding portfolio by conceiving the strategy, then identifying, designing, and winning funding opportunities from foundations, corporations and government agencies to support the important work of Building Bridges’s programs and general operating support.
RELATIONSHIP AND PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT
• The Director will forge and deepen partnerships with these organizations to generate both restricted gifts and general operating support for Building Bridges.
• The Director oversees all aspects of the pipeline, including competitive bids for grants, agreements, contracts, reports, and sponsorship proposals.
• In coordination with the Senior Director of Development, lead organization in envisioning and implementation of corporate giving strategy to expand Building Bridges’ donor base and build an institutional giving program of sustaining supporters.
• Works with the Building Bridges leadership to develop and execute an ambitious and comprehensive institutional funding strategy for the organization.
• Works with teams across the organization to develop overall winning strategies through pre-application positioning, facilitating partner outreach and developing budget proposals in conjunction with team leads.
• Writes, edits and submits high quality donor communications and grant applications for funding opportunities.
• Ensures that grant submissions are up to the highest standards of writing, formatting, and adherence to formal requirements.
• Builds a network of contacts and relationships with foundation funders through networking activities.
• Proactively identifies, cultivates and stewards prospective and current foundation philanthropic partners for themselves and Building Bridges executives.
• Ensures proper stewardship for current partners.
• Articulates and presents Building Bridges' capabilities and strengths in foundation funder meetings and also listens to funder needs/requirements to conceptualize and design programs to integrate their needs.
• Overseas all administrative and technical aspects of the pipeline, including conducting prospect research, tracking grant deadlines, and proposal calendars and managing records in CRM.
• Manages team of two Institutional Giving Managers, setting clear priorities with annual financial goals in mind, promoting professional growth through continuing education and coaching, and ensuring deadlines are met.
Qualifications & Requirements:
• Passionate about the mission of Building Bridges and uplifting under-served communities. Knowledge of east of the river communities is preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of direct fundraising experience in the nonprofit sector with corporate, foundation, and government supporters preferred.
• Demonstrable record of cultivating and securing five- and six-figure gifts.
• Demonstrated supervisory experience.
• Able to compellingly articulate the mission, programs and stories of Building Bridges in writing and in person.
• Self-motivated, team-player with exceptional customer service orientation.
• Excellent written (including editing and proofreading) and verbal communication skills, including the ability to understand and translate Building Bridges mission to different audiences.
• Must possess strong interpersonal skills, as well as have excellent multitasking abilities to participate in a variety of projects.
• Knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in the use of software (Windows OS, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and donor databases such as Donor Perfect) and the ability to use or learn technology used at Building Bridges, including iWave research platform and WordPress web management.
• Intellectually curious, creative, and strategic thinker. Able to think out of the box, challenge conventional norms, and try new approaches.
• Has a high level of emotional intelligence, cultural sensitivity, and interpersonal skills.
• Sound judgment and integrity with discretion in handling and securing confidential information, as well as the ability to conduct oneself in a highly professional manner.
