Summary:
The Educational Skills Specialist (ESS) is responsible for providing advice, and support in the areas of adult learning, remediation, academic enhancement, time management, knowledge organization, and test-taking for medical students. The Educational Skills Specialist meets frequently with students, both for one-on-one coaching sessions and developing individualized study plans, as well as group informational presentations. The ESS develops individual student study plans, designs, and implements academic support programs to promote student retention and success. The Educational Skills Specialist will provide support to all student members of the COM learning community and guide students towards reaching their full academic potential
Essential Duties:
- Develop and Implement Academic Support Programs to Promote Medical Student Retention and Success.
- Meets frequently with medical students to develop individual study plans to address the areas of learning skills, including time and study management, knowledge organization, and testing skills.
- Mentors medical students on individual learning preferences and test preparation strategies.
- Serve as an advocate for students by addressing academic concerns in relation to their performance and provide guidance on support services.
- Manage the COM’s Tutoring Program, including the onboarding, training and management of time cards and payroll.
- Measure the efficiency of the tutoring program to understand its effectiveness.
- Host training opportunities to tutors to learn various modalities and styles of learning to consider as they provide tutoring services to their peers.
- Consult with faculty, staff, or administration, as needed, regarding issues of medical student academic performance trends and academic progress issues.
- Collaborates with other departments and professionals to create and implement support programs and resources for transition programs and specialized groups.
- Facilitates the referral process for students in need of additional support services, both on and off campus, including mental health counseling, financial aid, career advising, and medical care.
- Seeks out and maintains referral network for academic support services.
- Explore professional development opportunities to stay informed about current trends and best practices to support medical students in their learning
- Conducts seminars and workshops for medical students to improve learning skills and test-taking abilities.
- Coordinates workshops and provides individualized support to help medical students study and pass the COMLEX LEVEL I Exam.
- Compiles data on COMLEX resources, practice exam results and COMLEX LEVEL I exam results.
- Provide individual academic skill assessments and consultations under both
- voluntary and mandatory conditions.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualification/Education:
Educational:
- Minimal requirement: Earned Master’s degree in Education, Educational Psychology, or another relevant field.
Desired Qualification:
- Three years 'experience as a student services professional in a higher education institution.
- Experience working with health science student populations and/or medical students.
Skills & Experience:
- Demonstrated ability to work with learners of all backgrounds and capabilities.
- Ability to interpret and communicate to others complex policies and procedures.
- Proven leadership and strong oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience working in large, highly structured environments.
- Ability to work independently with a high degree of reliability, accuracy, and productivity.

- Demonstrated ability to maintain harmonious working relationships and effectively address complex and sensitive administrative issues.
- Proven record of accomplishment in exercising discretion and independent judgment effectively in decision-making processes.

- Evidence of ability to be innovative in the workplace.
- Effective at dealing with sensitive issues and maintaining collegial relationships.
- Prior experience in undergraduate medical education is preferred.
