Position Overview:
This position is a member of the Camp Management team with the Camp Director and other Seasonal Assistant Camp Directors and is responsible for directly supervising seven Unit Coordinators and providing secondary support to Counselors serving 2nd – 12th grade campers. Responsibilities include planning, facilitating, and supporting camp from pre-camp training through the cessation of the camping session in coordination with the Camp Management team. This position is also responsible for supporting implementation of any accommodations or adjustments that support campers’ success at camp. This includes collaborating with the healthcare team and reviewing camper information, meeting with staff to discuss program and/or schedule adjustments, and directly engaging campers with specific needs.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- This role will come in contact with campers, families, visitors, vendors and employees. Each of these persons may have visible and invisible qualities that makes that person unique. - Work collaboratively in a team environment with a spirit of cooperation including supporting Namanu by assisting with duties outside of this role.
- Open to feedback and contributing to an environment of continual learning.
- Schedule and lead regular observation time, check-ins, and meetings with direct reports. Provide written and verbal feedback to direct reports and support them in their professional growth.
- Support and coach Coordinators on topics such as staff supervision, safety protocols, community expectation setting, conflict management, problem solving, scheduling, and other steps to ensure a safe social, emotional, and physical environment for campers and staff members.
- Supervise, evaluate, observe, and provide support to Coordinators, including covering time-off and stepping in to support Program Specialists as needed.
- Coordinate weekly tasks to ensure staff are aware of camper needs and reasonable accommodations are provided.
- Review weekly camper health information with Director of Health & Wellness and Assistant Director of Health & Wellness.
- Assist Unit and Program staff with accommodations, coaching and best practices to support campers. Ensure availability to staff for both structured and informal support as needed.
- Inform staff weekly of any specific needs their campers may require.
- Assist Camp Director with planning and facilitation of pre-camp set-up and training, safety protocols, staff meetings, weekly clean-up, end-of-summer shut down, and other management tasks as needed.
- Participate in pre-summer planning meetings, Manager team meetings, and other as-needed meetings with Camp Director.
- Supports Logistics team with Sunday check-in, Friday check-outs, and any all-camp program activities.
- Act as role model for all staff including setting and following community expectations, proactively solving problems, providing general support to all camp staff, managing self-care, and other tasks as needed to help create a safe and positive work environment.
- Assists with individual, cabin, unit, and all camp activities.
- Support program goals and community expectations for all units. Ensure the program uses best youth development practices and safety procedures.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Directly supervise seven unit coordinators. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; coaching employees on performance; addressing concerns and resolving problems.

Qualifications:

- Preferred: Demonstrated knowledge and/or experience working with youth with specific needs or implementing behavior support plans, completed coursework in Psychology, Special Education, Sociology, or other relevant field and/or an understanding of equitable practices to support all identities.
- Displays excellent communication skills including presentation, persuasion, and negotiation skills required in working with coworkers, volunteers, parents, and contractors; including the ability to communicate effectively and remain calm and courteous under pressure.
- Has a High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. We are able to hire a small number of current high-school aged staff that are at least 17-years-old, but the majority of our staff must be 18 years or older.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, manage time and stress levels, and proactively solve problems.
- Ability to interact with campers of varying age levels.
- Ability to comprehend and interpret instructions.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Prior to June 2025, must be able to obtain a valid Oregon Food Handler’s card, First Aid & CPR certification and completion of Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse online training. https://occd.educadium.com/
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
The employee must frequently move up to 25 pounds and occasionally move up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to traverse varied terrain over the 60 acres of main camp, be stationary for prolonged periods, gather supplies from various heights and locations. In compliance with covid-19 protocols, employees are asked to wear a face mask when not actively consuming food/beverage.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is exposed to outdoor weather conditions 95% of the time. The employee may be occasionally exposed to work near moving mechanical parts and work in high, precarious places. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate with occasional periods of excessive noise (i.e. meal times, talent show).
Housing for this position will be shared with other staff members in a lodge or house, which are rustic. This space will be a fully enclosed building and will include electricity, kitchen and a shared all-gender bathroom.
