Job Description: Resident Assistant
Resident Assistants are primarily responsible for developing meaningful relationships with youth, supervision needs, advanced life skills training, as well as demonstrated use of positive mentoring and guidance: Professional responsibilities include application of the following:
1. Demonstrate wise use of Child and Youth Care Code of Ethics in work life with youth
2. Use Trust Based Relational Interventions in developing healthy relationships
3. Read service plans and know youth history, specialized needs, interests, ability,
and problems; facilitate problem resolution and progress toward maturity
4. Maintain routine contact with Program Director in an effort to optimize service
plan development and communication regarding individual youth needs; follow
program guideline and facilitate independent thoughts for youth in decision
making. Ask questions on how they think they should resolve problem before you
give suggestions. Help them apply good judgement and comply with agency policy.
5. Provide written information to Program Director regarding any problems or
celebrations to be reviewed in weekly house meetings in an effort to keep youth
informed, discuss guidelines, clarify misinformation, debrief and solve problems.
6. Remain on premises and facilitate agency responsibilities; use time for
completing assigned tasks, documenting, computer files, resident charts, and
care of home.
7. Encourage youth to maintain a clean organized room and clean common areas
of household; role model standards for youth and provide interactive support
8. Orient new youth to program guidelines, responsibilities, policies, and all safety
procedures within first week of residence; encourage compliance with safety
rules.
9. Complete professional responsibilities, documentation, and record keeping in a
timely manner; maintain compliance with agency and accreditation standards.
10. Coordinate household tasks and lawn care with youth in an effort to maintain
clean living environment. Engage in side by side chore performance to teach
advanced independent living skills; demonstrate the importance of organization
and cooperation.
11. Plan evening meal preparation with youth; lead family style meal Monday-
Thursday.
12. Provide transportation for youth according to designated agency Shuttle Service.
Provide emergency transportation as needed. Assist residents with public
transportation as needed
13. Monitor visitors to ensure compliance with agency policy; inform Program
Director of any inappropriate behavior or rule violations.
14. Monitor premises to ensure no one, other than residents, are in the house from
10:00 pm - 12:00 pm weekdays, and 12:00 am - 12:00 pm on weekends. No
overnight guests are allowed on the premises unless previously approved by the
Program Director.
15. Encourage residents to honor the use of quiet hours from 10:00 pm - 6:00 am on
weekdays, and 12:00 am - 6:00 am on weekends to facilitate cooperative living.
16. Actively use safety drills: check entrances and emergency exits daily for security
purposes. Ensure monthly fire drills and tornado and Lock-down drills in season.
17. Follow established emergency and safety procedures in accordance with agency
policy and licensing standards. Contact on-call administrative staff or Program
Director in an emergency and follows directives.
18. Be alert for unauthorized contraband or practices that are prohibited on the
premises; report any problems to Program Director or on-call immediately.
19. Maintain working knowledge of agency policy and procedure in an effort to
provide accurate information for residents. Rules and regulations governing the
Transitional Living Program are printed in the Resident Handbook.
20. Serve as positive agency representative to neighbors and community service
agencies. Role model healthy social skills and boundaries for youth and young
adults.
21. Be accessible and establish positive lines of communication. Encourage and
guide healthy interaction between youth; teach skills to develop skills with future
housemates.
22. Be available to youth to discuss social, personal, or academic interests. Listen
carefully to what residents are communicating; take sincere interest in their lives.

23. Support Big Sister representative and Youth Advisory Board; facilitate leadership
skills.
24. Maintain professional boundaries; do not discuss problems with other residents.
Confidentiality is critical. Follow treatment guidelines to facilitate rapport; contact
the Program Director regarding crisis situations or critical information.
25. Support the philosophy of the Transitional Living Program by helping youth learn
to actively engage in independent living, become independent thinkers, promote
social skills, and foster their educational pursuits. Help them with educational,
vocational and educational goals. Support the Young Adult Advocate in achieving
these goals.
26. Assist youth with purchase of food and supplies for agency and program use;
monitor inventory to control for waste and teach conservation of supplies
27. Work as part of the agency team and not as an individual with solo benefit. Stick
to the Service Plan. Complete directives set forth by Program Director and Young
Adult Advocate to optimize agency management; report to Young Adult Advocate
28. Role model mature, empathetic, responsible behavior in demonstrating
appropriate social, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual development for youth;
reinforce use of moral development. Attend training and meetings to support
professional development.

Pay: $10.50 - $11.00 per hour
