Job Description:

STC is seeking highly motivated scientists across all levels to support scientific research, application development, and product support and validation for remote sensing of precipitation, and the characteristics of tropical systems, lightning, and aviation hazards (e.g., turbulence and volcanic ash). These efforts support the Precipitation Geophysical Product Category in the NESDIS Level 1 Requirements document; and includes the activities of the Precipitation and Hydrology STAR Science Teams.

 

This Task supports work on many operational products under the Precipitation and Hydrology Team, including the following, and supported efforts for both products include improving the current algorithm and developing a next-generation algorithm using more advanced artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) techniques -

  • Enterprise Rainfall Rate algorithm - uses IR data onboard multiple geostationary satellites to produce a global mosaic of retrieved rain rates; and
  • Ensemble Tropical Rainfall Potential (eTRaP) product - estimates 0-24 h accumulated rainfall for tropical systems worldwide. The ability to develop and maintain science applications in cloud-based operating environments is required in support of the NOAA-NESDIS 5-year plan to migrate to a cloud-based production and development environment.
Job Requirements

The ability to develop and maintain science applications in cloud-based operating environments is required in support of the NOAA-NESDIS 5-year plan to migrate to a cloud-based production and development environment. Selected candidate(s) shall be proficient in programming in Python and/or FORTRAN.

 

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Astronomy, Atmospheric Sciences, Chemistry, Climatology, Environmental, Geology, Materials Science, Meteorology, Oceanography, Physics, Space Applications, or related field.
