- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid Texas commercial driver’s license (Class B) with “P” & “S” endorsements
- Current Texas School Bus Driver medical examination.
- Current DPS certification for School Bus Drivers
- Associate Degree in Auto Repair and/ or a minimum of four (4) ASE Automotive Certifications (Automotive A1-A-8 or Medium/Heavy Duty Truck T1-T6, or School Bus S1-S7) or obtain ASE certifications within 18 months of employment, or TASBT Texas Association of School bus technician equivalent
- Required to maintain ASE certifications or TASBT certifications
- Required to obtain TAPT #01 Introductory to transportation, #08 Personal Management and #23 Introduction to Leadership within 18 months of employment
- Possess and maintain Texas School Bus Driver certification
- Airbrake Certified
- Acceptable communications, public relations, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs
- Ability to operate tools and equipment involved in vehicle repair
- Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts
- Ability to pass alcohol and drug test
- Ability to pass required bus driver safety training
- Acceptable driving record
- Ability to operate a school bus
- Must be able to diagnose and troubleshoot and effectively make repairs for All district vehicles including removal, replacement and diagnoses of engines, fuel systems, transmissions, electrical systems
- Knowledge of Service Maxx, Diamond Logic builder, Cummins In-site, Mercedes, and Detroit Programs
- After treatment systems including EGR Valves, EGR Coolers, SCR, DPF, DOC and Injector Diagnostics
- Turbo chargers –Cylinder cutout test –Leak down test-high
- Minimum five (5) years auto/truck maintenance and repair experience
- Must demonstrate leadership qualities through past experience
- Service vehicles according to established preventive maintenance schedule.
- Rotate and balance tires, change oil and filters, lubricate vehicle parts, inspect and replace hoses, belts, mirrors, lamps, and maintain all fluid levels.
- Maintain accurate and updated records of preventive maintenance.
- Diagnose mechanical problems of vehicles.
- Use diagnostic equipment to evaluate mechanical problems in vehicles.
- Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures
- Promotes high standards of safety and acceptable housekeeping methods in all working areas.
- Performs mechanical duties such as a general mechanic, and “specialty” duties including but not limited to maintenance and overhaul gas / diesel / transmission and repair of all safety equipment.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
- Maintain accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and services.
- Uses time wisely to ensure productivity and efficiency.
- Assists Shop Foreman with shop procedures and policies through example and instruction to others.
- Perform and assumes responsibility of shop supervision and operation in absence of the Shop Foreman.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and to work within time constraints and under pressure
- Drive a school bus as required by the Transportation Department

Primary Purpose:
Perform major and minor mechanical repairs by leading a team to ensure proper performance and safety of district vehicles. Perform assigned work following established policies and procedures.
