Position Summary:


The Assistant Accounting Manager serves as the principal assistant to the college’s Director of Finance, helping perform analysis, research, and follow-ups as applicable. The position enables the College to meet financial management, reporting and accreditation requirements by ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of analyzed financial information. The position performs analysis that empowers management to make sound resource management decisions that enable the college to fulfill its mission.

The position collaborates with fiscal analysts and specialists to interpret and apply accounting principles and practices, applicable laws, statutes, rules and ordinances, and departmental policies. Working within a complex environment with a large number of reporting and compliance requirements, the position is required to: analyze and reconcile complex financial transactions; provide assistance and support to staff related to assigned functional area and activities; and, evaluate, recommend and implement improvements to existing and new systems and processes.

As the Assistant Accounting Manager, it is expected that the following qualities will be demonstrated daily: a high degree of understanding and empathy for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors, as well as the ability to encourage the inclusion of all voices in decision-making, promoting equity in all areas, and actively working against institutionalized norms of oppression against historically marginalized people.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Collaborates with deans, HR/Payroll, directors and operations team members to optimize the tracking and reporting of financial activities.
  • Facilitates data-gathering and reporting for college-initiated monthly, quarterly and annual financial reviews with a variety of stakeholders including the President, Vice Presidents, Deans, Directors, Board of Trustees and members of the State Board accounting and business office.
  • Assists department leads with budgetary and financial analysis and reporting. Maintains the integrity of the budget data as it changes. Gathers data and facts in order to complete analysis. Decides what technique should be implemented to achieve goals and communicates information to appropriate parties.
  • Tracks, analyzes and reports program goals and outcomes to internal and external agencies.
  • Assists with leading critical finance projects and initiatives (e.g., federal reporting, ctcLink year-end; improving/establishing processes, answering questions from stakeholders)
  • Supports fiscal analysts, conducts training and providing technical advice and counsel to junior finance employees and other College staff.
  • Demonstrates applied level proficiency in accounting practices, principles and interrelationships for both management and outside agencies/organizations.
  • Observes internal controls and financial compliance initiatives and provides feedback for improvements by applying audit techniques and practices to ensure the integrity and accuracy of recorded information.
  • Coordinates other special projects and programs as requested; may serve on various committees as assigned; attends and participates in professional group meetings.
  • In absence of the Director of Finance, serves in Director of Finance place.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.


Education & Experience:


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of classes equating to 8-12 quarters (4-6 semesters; 2-3 years full-time) while pursuing a degree in accounting, finance or business administration from an accredited institution or equivalent work experience
  • 1 year of progressively responsible experience as an accountant in a non-profit, education or other government agency or 3 years in other industries.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness, and ability to independently research
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion and the ability to support a diverse workplace and educational environment


Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1 year of experience in fund accounting
  • Knowledge of Governmental Accounting and Fund Reporting (GAAFR) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) guidelines
  • Experience working with PeopleSoft
  • Experience working in the Washington State Community and Technical College system


Physical Work Environment:


Semi-Sedentary Work: Involves staying in a stationary position to a significant degree. Jobs are sedentary if moving is required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.


The College is currently in hybrid operations, with many assignments completed in an online environment during this time. Full-time employees are expected to be on-campus at least three (3) days per week with the option to work remotely for the remainder of their working days. Employees will need to provide their own remote workspace and internet access, noting the College will provide technical equipment and support for online work needs. During on-campus operations, this position will perform work in a standard office setting, use standard office equipment and physically attend meetings both on and off campus and requires the ability to communicate in person or through appropriate means.

Positions in this class typically require operating a computer, communicating, observing, and repetitive motions.


This position involves exerting between 10-30 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to transport, put, install, remove, or otherwise move objects, with or without reasonable accommodation.
