The Center for Workforce Inclusion is recruiting for an Environmental Compliance Specialist position in the grant-administered Senior Environmental Employment (SEE) Program to work at the National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory (NVFEL) operated by the Environmental Protection Agency based in Ann Arbor Michigan.

Role and Responsibilities:  

Assists the Agency to ensure that organizations adhere to environmental regulations and standards.  This position involves a combination of technical expertise, auditing data and records, and program implementation, including: 

  • Environmental Audits: Conduct regular environmental compliance audits of data or records submissions to assess adherence to regulations. Identify areas of non-compliance and recommend corrective actions.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Stay up-to-date with federal, state, and local environmental regulations. Interpret and apply these regulations to organizational practices.
  • Technical Assistance: Provide technical guidance to internal teams and stakeholders regarding mobile source environmental regulations, management systems, and projects.
  • Engine and Vehicle Compliance Information Systems (EVCIS) Perform analyses, audit data and review documents submitted into the EVCIS database.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records related to compliance activities, inspections, and corrective actions.
  • Training and Education: Develop and deliver environmental training programs for stakeholders.  This may include contributing to the development of outreach videos and other material for stakeholders and the regulated industry to facilitate compliance. Promote awareness of environmental responsibilities.
  • Risk Assessment: Assess potential environmental risks and recommend preventive measures in cooperation with Federal Employees and teams.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, regulatory agencies, and external stakeholders.
  • Reporting: Prepare reports on compliance status, violations, certification analysis, compliance review, engine / vehicle certification, and corrective actions.
  • Environmental Justice: Consider environmental justice principles by protecting vulnerable communities from pollution impacts.

Qualifications and Education Requirements: Successful candidates must meet the age criteria of being 55 years of age or older and a United States citizen; able to pass a Federal Background check; BA/BS in environmental science, engineering or a related field ( in lieu of a degree, experience in the automotive or other regulated sectors; Knowledge of federal environmental statutes (e.g., Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, RCRA); strong analytical skills and attention to detail; excellent communication and interpersonal abilities; experience with environmental audits and compliance programs is preferred

Hours & Compensation:  Full-Time position working 40 hours per week @ $41,702 per year ($19.21 per hour), plus benefits including paid health insurance and generous vacation/sick/holiday leave.
