Director of Elementary Teaching and Learning Position Description
POSITION OVERVIEW
Central Kitsap School District is seeking equity-focused leaders who inspire staff to create hope and resiliency for our students and staff. Your knowledge and skills will offer gap‐closing services to buildings and departments and collaborate with educational leaders and community groups to achieve District goals. The Director of Elementary Schools is a senior leadership position responsible for overseeing the academic, operational, and administrative functions of 12 elementary schools within the district. This individual will provide guidance and support to school principals and staff, ensuring alignment with district goals, fostering academic excellence, and promoting a positive school culture across all schools. The Director will work collaboratively with district leaders, school communities, and external stakeholders to ensure the success and well-being of elementary students.
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: Master’s degree in Education Leadership, Administration, or related field required; minimum of seven years of experience in education, including experience in leadership or administrative roles (preferred experience as an elementary school principal or district-level leader). Strong understanding of elementary education, child development, curriculum design, and instructional best practices. Proven success in leading and supporting principals and teachers to improve student outcomes. Experience with strategic planning, program development, and resource management. Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Strong understanding of educational policies, data analysis, and compliance requirements at the state and federal levels. Experience working in a multi-school district or overseeing multiple school sites. Knowledge of current trends in education technology and how to integrate it across multiple schools.
Certificates & Licenses: A valid Washington State administrator credential is required. Some positions may also require valid first aid and CPR certification, and/or a valid Washington State driver’s license and/or a Class II driver’s license.
Clearances: Criminal justice fingerprint and background check.
ESSENTIAL KEY QUALITIES
1. Leadership & Strategic Oversight:
· Lead the development and implementation of district-wide educational strategies, policies, and goals for elementary schools.
· Collaborate with district leadership to align elementary school objectives with overall district priorities.
· Provide visionary leadership, fostering a culture of excellence, inclusion, and continuous improvement across all 12 elementary schools.
2. Academic & Instructional Leadership:
· Ensure the implementation of high-quality, rigorous, and developmentally appropriate curricula across all elementary schools.
· Support school principals in overseeing instructional strategies and best practices for improving student outcomes.
· Monitor student achievement data, provide actionable feedback, and assist in the development of improvement plans as needed.
3. Principal Support & Development:
· Supervise and mentor the principals of the 12 elementary schools, offering guidance in leadership development and day-to-day school operations.
· Provide professional development opportunities for principals and elementary school staff, ensuring continuous growth and alignment with district-wide initiatives.
· Assist principals in developing and implementing school-specific improvement plans and resolving operational challenges.
4. Student & Family Engagement:
· Promote and advocate for the social, emotional, and academic development of elementary-aged students.
· Support the creation of inclusive and culturally responsive learning environments that meet the needs of diverse student populations.
· Foster strong partnerships with families, community organizations, and stakeholders to ensure the success and well-being of students.
5. Operational Oversight & Resource Allocation:
· Oversee the efficient allocation of resources (staffing, budgets, facilities) across all elementary schools, ensuring equity and optimal utilization.
· Work with the district’s central administration to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations regarding educational standards, safety, and budgeting.
· Manage the annual budget for elementary schools, working to ensure resources are used effectively to support student success.
6. Data-Driven Decision Making:
· Collect and analyze data on student performance, staff development, and operational effectiveness across the 12 elementary schools.
· Use data to inform decisions, improve instructional practices, and identify areas for continuous improvement.
· Report regularly to the superintendent and school board on the progress and outcomes of elementary school initiatives.
7. Community Relations & Advocacy:
· Represent elementary schools in district-wide meetings and events, advocating for the needs of students and teachers.
· Build and maintain positive relationships with parents, teachers, local organizations, and community leaders to foster support for the district’s goals.
· Lead efforts to involve parents and communities in the academic and extracurricular activities of the elementary schools.

Required to support a wide range of student achievement and behavior; required to remain flexible to meet students immediate needs; required to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize; may experience frequent interruptions; may occasionally work with distraught or difficult students; potentially exposed to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students; in some positions the necessary and appropriate instructional methods may require specific positions and movements, and sufficient stamina and exertions, to demonstrate techniques properly for student safety, or to conduct or direct students; in some positions precautions may need to be taken to prevent or lessen exposure of self and/or students to various materials, fumes, equipment, cutting edges or hot surfaces.
