Overview: |
The Payroll and Benefits Specialist will prepare, compile, review, reconcile, and maintain payroll data to ensure accuracy of payroll for employees of Rockbridge County Public Schools while also assisting in the maintenance of an employee benefits program to include assisting employees, working with insurance vendors, and partnering with our insurance broker. |

High School Diploma required. Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree preferred |
Qualifications: |
The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, have excellent organizational skills, knowledge of MS Office/Google Suite, knowledge of payroll systems, knowledge of employee benefit packages and options, ability to maintain confidentiality, communicate clearly and concisely orally and in writing, cooperative relationship builder, deadline focused To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Essential Duties: |
o Compile payroll data, such as hours worked, taxes, insurance, from time sheets and other records. o Provide responsive customer service to employees and vendors through all interactions. o Process annual salary data for all full-time and part-time employees. o Process stipends for department chairs, extra-curricular activity sponsors, and coaches. o Audit and process timesheet data for each semi-monthly payroll including those for hourly employees reporting over-time, cafeteria supervisors, adult education workers, and extra duty teaching. o Process deductions for insurance premiums, credit union contributions, tax-sheltered annuity contributions, pre-tax flexible spending accounts, professional dues, charitable donations, and wage attachments. o Proofread payroll checks for accuracy each payroll cycle. o Monitor attendance activity for accurate recording on payroll check stub. o Direct deposit net earnings to savings and checking accounts. o Organize, mail, and distribute payroll checks. o Initiate electronic funds tax payments to the Internal Revenue Service. o Process and remit liability payments to various annuity companies, county clerks, association treasurer, charitable organizations, and other miscellaneous agencies. o Process and report federal, state, and social security tax liabilities and payments for governmental agencies on semi-monthly, quarterly, and annual cycles. o Record and monitor teaching hours and salary for Virginia Retirement System (VRS) pension compliance. o Research and report employment and salary history required by financial loan institutions, apartment complex administrators, and worker’s compensation claims for active and former employees. o Organize and distribute annual W-2, Wage and Tax Statements. o Edit and process the VRS Earnings and Pension Contributions. o Proofread fiscal year salary report for accuracy prior to publication. o Interface with the local county government regarding payroll system irregularities. o Manage annual enrollment period. o Responsible for the preparation and distribution of annual enrollment materials. o Process insurance forms for all monthly employees within payroll deadlines. o Reconcile monthly benefit premium payments. o Assist in resolving claims issues with all vendors. o Carry out other duties as assigned
