What are the responsibilities and job description for the Electric System Operator position at Central Virginia Electric Cooperative?
CVEC is hiring an Electric System Operator, responsible for operating CVEC's control center. Responsible for monitoring and performing real-time actions to operate and restore CVEC's electric distribution / transmission systems in a safe, reliable, and economic manner.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Directs field personnel in emergency response to electric distribution / transmission outage with the authority and responsibility to evaluate, prioritize and manage the restoration of system outages. Is responsible for the overall restoration strategy and quality of the outage resolution data.
Performs radio dispatching to transmit and receive operational data and information.
Dispatches crews for outage restoration and service reconnects.
Effectively prepares electric switching procedures to be used in outage restoration.
Performs switching and dispatching of system equipment remotely, according to prepared switching procedures.
Operates SCADA, AMR, Outage Management, digital mapping, and Load Management systems to efficiently analyze, prioritize, and manage control center functions. Responds to reported data and alarms of SCADA system according to control center procedures.
Performs electric distribution switching procedures during scheduled and emergency operations. Coordinates switching operations with field supervisors, and field crews, as necessary. Maintains records of all switching operations.
Accurately reports data associated with system conditions to facilitate creation of various reports.
Generates and distributes information for reports and records including outage reports and system studies and improvements.
Provides technical input to assist in developing policies, procedures, practices, and project planning.
Operates telephone console. Responds to customer inquires and/or complaints and routes to appropriate personnel. Communicates CVEC policies to customers.
Processes after-hours bill payments.
Prepares service orders.
Maintains database and spreadsheet files.
Complies with all safety policies, regulations and procedures.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- An Associate's Degree in a technical field and electrical power distribution construction, or other relevant field or equivalent work experience.
- Five years of prior work experience in this or a related field (e.g. system control center operations, dispatch, substation operations, or field operations) or equivalent
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Ability to solve problems and interpret a variety of instructions

Knowledge of power system devices and operating characteristics and technical skills related to understanding energy control and switching.

Understands policies, procedures, standards, and regulations related to field work in Service and Metering, and Electric Distribution systems.

Able to work systematically to analyze problems and issues, identify causes, anticipate implications, and identify effective courses of action.

Strong knowledge of the Company's electric distribution systems and basic characteristics of electricity.

Able to make independent decisions including under stressful, time-constrained conditions.

Effective oral and written communication skills.

Good interpersonal communication skills to provide clear communications and to maintain proper relationships with field crews, customers, peers, supervisors, and external agencies.

Able to work with all computerized and communication systems in the Systems Operations Center.

Able to read and interpret electric distribution maps and understand other types of schematic diagrams.
