What you’ll do
Direct Patient Care
- Perform skilled venipuncture procedures on diverse patient populations
- Collect blood samples using various techniques (straight needle, butterfly, etc.)
- Build rapport with veteran patients to ensure comfortable experiences
- Practice thorough patient identification using VA's two-identifier system
- Respond professionally to patient concerns and questions
- Handle special collection requirements for specific tests
- Assist patients with mobility challenges
Laboratory Operations
- Oversee the phlebotomy team, including scheduling shifts, assigning tasks, and evaluating performance to ensure efficient workflow and high-quality patient care.
- Train new phlebotomy staff in proper blood collection techniques, patient interaction, and safety procedures to maintain high standards of practice
- Operate state-of-the-art laboratory equipment
- Manage specimen accessioning and documentation
- Maintain proper storage conditions for specimens
- Ensure accurate labeling and tracking of all samples
- Follow strict quality control procedures
- Monitor and maintain supply inventory
Additional Key Responsibilities
- Use VA's electronic health record system for order management and documentation
- Follow VA and CAP (College of American Pathologists) safety protocols
- Work collaboratively with laboratory technologists, pathologists, and nursing staff
- Participate in regular competency assessments and department meetings
- Maintain clean and organized work areas while ensuring HIPAA compliance
Required Qualifications
- Current Phlebotomy Certification
- Current BLS Certification
- 3 years of clinical phlebotomy experience
- Strong computer skills
- Excellent patient care abilities
Work Schedule
- Full-time position
- Various day shifts available: 7am-3:30pm
