Summary
The Swim Lesson Instructor is responsible for teaching swim lessons to children and adults.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 15 years of age and have a valid work permit.
- Ability to effectively communicate with the public and staff and work cooperatively and harmoniously with people in an enthusiastic manner.
- Ability to plan swim lessons and maintain accurate records.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Patient and positive attitude.
- Creative and Engaging teaching methods.
- Ability to assess skills and provide feedback.
Supervision
The Swim Lesson Instructor reports directly to the Swim Lesson Manager.
Classification
- Non-exempt, hourly
- Seasonal (not to exceed six (6) months)
- Season is May to September
Training – Can be obtained through the Champaign Park District
- Mandated reporter training
- Harassment prevention training
- Bloodborne pathogen training
- Facility training
- Swim instructors training
Essential Functions
- Follow all Champaign Park District safety policies and perform all work in a manner that ensures the safety of oneself, the public, fellow employees.
- Demonstrate a high level of professionalism and discretion in all interactions, including maintaining strict confidentiality regarding staff information, communications from supervisors, and conversations with parents or patrons. Uphold the Park District’s policies and standards for data privacy and confidentiality at all times.
- Keep accurate records of daily swim lesson attendance to ensure organized tracking of participant progress.
- Instruct swim lessons for both children and adults, catering to diverse age groups and skill levels.
- Oversee and lead scheduled swim lessons, providing guidance and direction to participants in a structured manner.
- Regularly check all equipment and supplies, promptly reporting any repairs or needs to the Swim Lesson Manager for immediate attention.
- Issue swim cards, certifications, and/or evaluations to participants upon completion of a swim lesson or program, ensuring accurate documentation.
- Enforce and adhere to Champaign Park District policies and procedures consistently for a safe and standardized learning environment.
- Wear the assigned Champaign Park District staff uniform during all working hours, maintaining a professional appearance.
- Contribute to the daily upkeep of the facility, ensuring a clean and organized environment for both staff and participants.
- Assist in the general upkeep of the equipment room, promoting efficiency and accessibility of resources.
- Comply with equal opportunity and harassment laws, policies and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
Physical Considerations
- Endurance is essential for Swim Lesson Instructors to lead lessons for varying durations and maintain a high level of engagement.
- Physical ability to demonstrate swimming techniques accurately, serving as a visual model for participants to follow.
- Air and water temperatures may change due to weather.
- May be exposed to pool and cleaning chemicals.
Environmental Considerations
- Swim Lesson Instructors need to adapt to the pool environment, considering factors like water temperature, pool depth, and changing weather conditions if lessons are held outdoors.
- If conducting outdoor lessons, Swim Lesson Instructors should be prepared to adapt to varying weather conditions, ensuring the safety and comfort of participants.
