This is a 12-month, grant funded/end of year position.

General Definition of Work

The student success coordinator, under moderate supervision, performs intermediate level work with limited decision-making discretion at Hawthorne Academy supporting project-based, career-focused learning to accelerate students along the path to success in college and career. Position designs, implements, and continuously improves educational curriculum content. Coordinates student learning opportunities that occur both in the classroom and work-based experiences related to the health sciences program. This position supports students in simultaneously pursuing a high school diploma and an associate's degree and/or up to two years of transferable college credit. Employee performs school-based work to carry out Board of Education policies and procedures as curriculum expert.

Place of Work

The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.

Essential Functions

  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
  • Serve as the school liaison to central office leadership and grant partners (Atrium, Carolinas College, and Bloomberg)
  • Build high quality industry partnerships that support pathway development and are embedded in the classroom
  • Collaborate to identify students interested in internships and coordinate field trips, job shadows, etc.
  • Facilitate relationships between the industry partners and the school, including but not limited to generating ideas with teachers of how to engage partners in the classroom
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts and educators to develop comprehensive curriculum materials for various academic subjects and grade levels
  • Conduct research to identify best practices, emerging trends, and innovative approaches to pathway and curriculum development
  • Develop instructional strategies, activities, and assessments that promote active learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Develop accountability measures for engaging all level of students in work-based learning
  • Monitor student progress and inform pathway students of articulated credit opportunities
  • Develop, manage, and track all Carolinas College Opportunities
  • Monitor pathway students to ensure they have a college or career plan; collaborate with counselors regarding pathways and opportunities for students
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, parents, and community members to gather input and feedback on curriculum initiatives
  • Design and facilitate informational sessions for parents showcasing Carolinas College
  • Develop and maintain marketing materials to promote pathways and academies
  • Design and implement professional development for teachers on how to provide career guidance to students related to job skills, goal setting, decision making, study skills and problem solving
  • Participate in professional development workshops and attend other related meeting as needed/required
  • Create an inclusive environment with positive communication
  • Perform related work as assigned or required

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Comprehensive in-depth knowledge and understanding of the principles, practices, and procedures of public school system policies
  • Comprehensive knowledge of educational standards, pedagogical theories, and best practices in teaching and learning
  • Comprehensive knowledge of staff development practices, procedures, and techniques
  • Comprehensive knowledge on how to utilize appropriate data and information to make instructional decisions for students
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of various learning styles, curriculum development and program evaluation, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning
  • Knowledge of CTE, work-based learning, and high school curriculum design
  • Skilled in the use of current software to include word processing, spreadsheets, and desktop publishing applications
  • Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment or software related to business needs
  • Ability to implement local, state, and federal rules, guidelines, and procedures into daily business operations
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to reason, make judgments, and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to employ positive communication skills in all settings/mediums
  • Ability to problem-solve utilizing sound judgment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding school system business
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and exercise sound judgement
  • Ability to develop related charts, graphs, reports, and records pertaining to school planning and strategy
  • Ability to conceptualize, initiate, monitor, and evaluate new and/or current programs
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven, rapidly changing team environment

Education And Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Valid NC teaching or school counseling license required
  • NC School Counseling license preferred
  • Minimum of three (3) years' teaching/school counseling experience, or work experience in business, industry or labor, or work-based learning required
  • Equivalent combination of experience and education

Special Requirements

  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license or ability to provide own transportation
  • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
