The Seasonal Kayak Guide role provides instruction and inspiration to our guests. You will lead classes, tours, check out rentals in, flatwater kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, mountain biking, and outdoor rock climbing. Classes and tours will have a component of local history and culture and the environment. Get paid to take people to do what you love!
Guide Responsibilities:
- Knowledge and proficiency of course content, and ability to demonstrating activity with safety and skill
- Partner with local businesses as well as nonprofits and outdoor organizations
- This position reports to company owner

Experience Requirement:
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience guiding outdoor activities
- Minimum age 25
- Demonstrated presentation abilities for an outdoor content
- Sound leadership skills to include excellent teaching and presentation abilities, and planning skills
- Highly organized
- Excellent teaching ability to groups
- Proven track record of forward planning
- You would be responsible for, instructing and leading indoor/outdoor recreation classes and programs for diverse populations
- Duties may include conducting/teaching events; performing administrative tasks such as completing program attendance reports, reserving facilities and creating marketing materials; assisting with researching, developing new programs; attending meetings as a representative of Chattanooga Guided Adventures
- Scheduling vehicles for program transportation and routine maintenance
- Work is performed with moderate supervision
Essential Functions:
- Assists in planning, preparing, coordinating, leading and facilitating a wide variety of indoor/outdoor recreational events, classes and/or activities which may include reserving facilities and/or transportation; procuring supplies; scheduling events, classes and/or activities; developing promotional and marketing materials; preparing rosters; setting up sites; monitoring events; assessing and managing program risks and/or performing other related activities
- Knowledge of risk management issues in the field of outdoor education and recreation
- Performs tasks related to routine operations of in field programming, including inventory and recreational gear/equipment maintenance activities and monitoring sites and facilities for potential safety hazards
- Commitment to providing the highest quality in customer service for information or resolving complaints over the phone and in person regarding recreation programming and activities
- Serves as a liaison with program participants, sponsors and volunteers
- Performs routine clerical work at end of shift (program end report)
- Registers participants for programs, events and/or classes; receives and processes applications and fees; maintains related records and information
- Uses, carries and answers their cell phone for business purposes at all times
- Drives a 12 passenger van and kayak trailer
- Clean Driving Record
- Performs other duties as assigned
Certifications:
- Basic First Aid and CPR
- Enroll and complete Wilderness First Aid certification within two months of hiring. You will not lead trips until you have these completed.
- Experience as a Wilderness First Responder (preferred)
- Preferred certifications in American Canoe Association, American Mountain Guide Association, International Mountain Bike Association
- Rock Climbing Guides need a minimum of Wilderness First Aid and CPR to lead trips solo
Knowledge and Skills:
- Regional experience with Chattanooga and other outdoor venues, parks, and waterways
- Knowledge of basic/adventure-based recreation operations in rock climbing, mountain biking, navigation, backpacking and paddle sports
- Skill in providing customer service; using a computer and related software applications; maintaining records; monitoring and maintaining inventory; communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction
Physical Demands:
- Requires routine lifting and movement of multiple 55 pound kayaks, bikes, boards, climbing, backpacking equipment, trailers and other equipment throughout your shift
- Shifts can require paddling and hiking distances over uneven natural surfaces over 6 miles per day with a fully loaded backpack
- You will be working outside in the elements throughout the year
- Minimum Expected Availability 3 days per week
Job Types: Part-time, Temporary
Pay: $14.50 - $15.00 per hour
Expected hours: 10 – 39 per week
