The Refrigeration / Air Conditioning Mechanic is responsible for the operation of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems along with reheat coils, thermostats, control valves, pneumatic valves, induction units, fan coil units, all direct expansion (DX) units, and refrigeration units.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

These duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned.

Properly diagnose equipment for needed repairs and complete repairs in an expedient manner, utilizing good judgment when ordering parts

Make repairs in a neat and orderly fashion, ensuring that equipment and systems are out of service no longer than necessary so that departments experience only minor inconveniences.

Perform repairs and/or adjustments to a variety of HVAC, DX, refrigeration equipment, and associated systems to increase the efficiency and longevity of the equipment

Inspect and operate refrigeration machinery and cooler and freezer units to determine that all are functioning properly.

Read thermometers and gauges and record readings

Regulate refrigerant and suction valves to increase or decrease the amount of refrigerant in order to maintain the desired degree of temperature.

Test efficiency of systems with anemometers and thermometers and make adjustments to systems as necessary

Initiate purchase orders for parts and machines

Make recommendations to supervisor for repair of mechanical devices and other types of equipment

Install refrigeration machinery, air conditioning equipment, water coolers, and small refrigerators in accordance with regulatory standards and accepted engineering practices

Install expansion and other types of valves in circuit in accordance with blueprints and manufacturer's specifications

Connect the compressor to a power source, which is usually an electric motor.

Install and connect independently operated water coolers and household-sized refrigerators following manufacturer's instructions.

Test large refrigeration systems before deeming them operational

Test joints and connections according to the types of refrigerant used to repair leaks and retests.

Operate the system for several hours, making adjustments to thermostats and valves to insure proper control of freezing action.

Re-lamp light fixtures, replace ceiling tiles, and work with other shop members in the proper identification of ductwork, piping, wiring and other needs as may arise.

Maintain inventory/stock of supplies used for facility repair, i.e. shower heads, light bulbs, air filters, toilet seals, etc.

Maintain tools and parts in good operating condition

Keep assigned areas clean and in a good overall appearance

Perform all work in accordance with all Preventive Maintenance work orders

Keep records of equipment assigned, showing the type, model number, installation date, repair history and/or service work performed on the same equipment

Maintain all other records pertaining to job functions as assigned

Perform all work associated with the Zone Discrepancy Program as assigned

Assist in the testing of various alarm systems, i.e. Fire Alarm System, etc.

Operate the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) as trained. Demonstrates a basic knowledge of the Carrier

Comfortworks and Trane Summit computer system

Respond to Codes as required and assist Security as necessary

Read the Read File on a weekly basis and sign as appropriate

Cross-train to be able to fulfill a shift in the boiler room

Demonstrate the ability to make all necessary rounds and observe the boiler room and associated equipment for proper operation, including being able to detect unusual noises, vibrations, and other symptoms of possible problems; take the necessary steps to resolve any problem(s) that arise

Shift equipment as appropriate, take readings, and keep all necessary written records associated with boiler plant operations

Be familiar with the operation and resetting of the Fire Alarm System

Maintain the confidentiality of patient, personnel, and department information at all times

Attend required hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in-service


Education and Experience

Minimum Required Education: High school diploma or GED

Preferred Education: Course(s) in mathematics, physics, shop, blueprint reading, and/or mechanical drawing

Experience: Completion of a 4 year apprenticeship or equivalent on-the-job training

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Applicant must have a Refrigerant Recovery certification.
