Central Office QUALIFICATIONS : High School diploma (additional related training desirable but not require). Previous secretarial experience beneficial. Organizational skills, word processing skills and proficiency in oral and written communication skills. Ability to operate office machines, such as computer, typewriter, copier and fax machine. Knowledge of software applications, such as word processing, spreadsheets, and database management currently used in the District. Ability to assume responsibility, display initiative, and exercise good judgment. Professional and personable. Ability to perform duties of a sensitive and confidential nature. Successful completion of training required by the Illinois State Board of Education or School District 170 Board of Education.
JOB SUMMARY : Performs administrative and secretarial support necessary to accomplish objectives established by the Building Principal. Adapts to the variety of responsibilities. Presents a positive image in contacts with the parents, community and staff. Properly handle confidential matters relating to students, student records, parents, staff and any other school related issues. Interpretation and translation of both verbal and written communication including, but not limited to, the school day, parent / teacher conferences, parent conferences, IEP meetings, and special education meetings. Assist with Bilingual Testing and Written Evaluations, provide effective communication between the school, the District, the student's family, and appropriate public agencies. Provide oral and written communication from Spanish / English and vice-versa for various meetings, documents, and activities.
REPORTS TO : Building Principal, Secretary to the Superintendent, and other Central Office Administrators.
SUPERVISES : Clerical / Bilingual Clerical Assistant (if applicable)
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT : Salary, benefits, and work year as established in the Support Staff Contract.
This is a district position which will require travel to other District 170 schools for the above responsibilities.
RESPONSIBILITIES :
Interpretation / Translation :
- Parent phone calls
- Parent / Teacher conferences

- Special Education meetings
- Translate both written and verbal communication from English to Spanish and Spanish to English.
- Provide interpretations as required by phone conferences or in person.
- Translate district-wide letters and documents.
- Proofread other translations and provide feedback.
- Serve as interpreter for Special Education programs.
- Serve as a liaison between school and community.
- Translates / interprets information, documents, forms, correspondence, and other material from one language to another; reads material and rewrites in specified language(s) following established rules pertaining to factors such as work meanings, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and mechanics.
- Acts as liaison between administrative / educational staff, resource personnel, and student body regarding the translation of English documents into another language.
- Contacts and collaborates with appropriate personnel to clarify information, as requested / presented.
- Provides feedback regarding cultural or linguistic issues.
- Uses computers and electronic applications (i.e., google suite, microsoft word, microsoft powerpoint, microsoft excel, etc.), types, prepares, and proofreads a variety of documents and forms (i.e., correspondence / memoranda, reports, tables, orders, etc.) from rough drafts and / or composes, as directed.
