What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director, Healthy Homes position at Chicago Housing Authority?
The Director of Healthy Homes is responsible for ensuring resident safety, promoting safe environmental practices within the agency’s housing portfolio, and ensuring we are properly addressing any lead, mold, and asbestos issues (or any other environmental hazards). The Director will develop, implement, and oversee programs to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations across all CHA properties.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and enforce CHA policies and procedures to comply with HUD, OSHA, EPA, Illinois EPA, and City of Chicago health and safety regulations.
- Conduct regular audits and inspections of properties to ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards.
- Oversee lead-based paint, asbestos, mold, pest control, and water quality programs in accordance with HUD and EPA regulations.
- Oversee investigations led by team into environmental incidents and findings, ensuring corrective actions are implemented.
- Partner with CHA’s Resident Services team to implement community health initiatives, such as asthma prevention and lead exposure reduction in units.
- Manage budgets for environmental health and safety programs, including grants and funding opportunities.
- Partner with capital construction teams to integrate health and safety improvements into renovation and modernization projects.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Public Health, or related field with a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in environmental health and safety management, preferably in Public Housing or Property Management. Strong knowledge of HUD environmental health policies, OSHA safety standards, EPA regulations, and City of Chicago health codes. Experience with local housing regulations a plus. Strong knowledge of environmental hazards in multi-family housing. Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to communicate safety concepts to residents, staff and local government. This position is on- call 24/7 and may be exposed to working in all climates and environments.
