Job Summary
The Support Service Specialist is responsible for a variety of tasks in order to maintain desired Hospital standards of sanitation, cleanliness and appearance as assigned. The Support Services Specialist is responsible for performing any combination of the following tasks including, but not limited to the storage and distribution of supplies, sleep surfaces and furnishings, process and transportation of waste and scheduled restorations of facility cleanliness and appearances.
Job Responsibilities
Responsible/Standard
- Arrive prepared to begin working.
- Be in correct designated/approved uniform prior to signing in including CHOP identification.
- Sign in on time sheet no earlier than 5 minutes before or after the beginning of the shift per clock at sign in/out area as per hospital/departmental policy.
- Verify assignment with immediate supervisor.
- Ensure availability of all supplies needed for entire shift.
- Check equipment prior to usage to ensure correct and safe operation.
Supply & Storage
- Maintain cleanliness of the storeroom areas.
- Properly receive and log all incoming and outgoing supplies.
- Maintain agreed stock levels and inventory.
- Issue housekeeping supplies as requested through the supply system.
- Provide management with information/data on the usage of supplies and equipment.
- On request, deliver or remove patient furniture including beds, cribs and related items.
Projects
- Receive assigned project from Management.
- Gather the necessary equipment needed to complete the project.
- Be mindful not to compromise the safety of patients, visitors and hospital staff.
- Move furniture as directed for cleaning purposes.
- Complete assigned project in a neat, clean, sanitary and timely manner.
- Maintain all environmental services equipment in a neat, clean and sanitary manner.
Waste Processing
- Collect/transport waste from designated areas.
- Follow and maintain standard precautions where possible/potential exposure to blood or body fluids.
- Clean and maintain standards of cleanliness for all waste/transport equipment.
- Clean/disinfect surfaces contaminated with body/blood fluid or any other liquid waste spills.
- Ensure waste is segregated/disposed of into appropriate categories (i.e., general, infectious, recycle, etc.)
- Operate any/all equipment relative to the safe disposal and/or recycling of waste.
- Utilize all cleaning agents/waste processing equipment as directed or instructed (compactor/bailer).
General
- Utilize all cleaning agents/equipment as directed or instructed.
- Notify Supervisor of specific needs i.e., job related, maintenance request, unsafe conditions, etc.
- Perform pushing and lifting tasks as required.
Complete the assigned work, shift and schedule
- Ensure closets/carts/all used equipment is left in clean and operable condition per Departmental policy.
- Sign out on time sheet no earlier or later than 5 minutes before or after the end of time shift per clock at designated sign in/out area.

Required Education and Experience
High school graduate

Additional Technical Requirements
- Good communication.
- Able to safely and effectively operate industrial cleaning equipment.
- Must present professional demeanor and attitude.
- Ability to deal effectively with the public and all hospital personnel.
- Math capability for translating/interpreting/converting chemical ratio and measure effectively.
- Reading capability for following written instruction and posted chemical/biohazardous/radiation warning labels/signage.
- Able to safely and effectively operate industrial waste disposal equipment.
- Must be flexible in schedule depending on assignment.
To carry out its mission, it is of critical importance for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) to keep our patients, families and workforce safe and healthy and to support the health of our global community. In keeping with this, CHOP has mandated all workforce members on site at any CHOP location for any portion of their time be vaccinated for COVID-19 as a condition of employment. This mandate also applies to workforce members performing work for CHOP at non-CHOP locations.
