We have a career opportunity for a Wastewater Operator in Training to join our team!
Work schedules are fixed and rotating shifts to provide 24-hour coverage, 7 days a week. The Operator in Training will be under the guidance of the Master Control Operator and Field Operator. Incumbent is responsible to learn and demonstrate the ability to safely maintain consistent operations based on SOP’s (Standard Operation Procedures), including but not limited to, the wastewater treatment plants, incineration process, disinfection process and liquids/solids handling. Position includes performing preventive general maintenance and housekeeping duties associated to wastewater treatment plants. The Operator in Training is required to learn and demonstrate the ability to operate equipment and processes in automatic and manual state. The incumbent is encouraged to obtain an Indiana Class I Wastewater Operators license within 18 months of hire. IDEM Certification and completion of training is required for promotion to Operator.

This is a bargaining union position and a member of the Local #725 AFSCME. Hourly rate is $29.00 per hour. Grade WW02. Weekend nights Saturday and Sunday 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. (2) 8 hour night shifts Monday and Friday 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. These hours are subject to change.
Responsibilities
- Conduct routine rounds documenting various readings including, but not limited to; sludge blanket depth, equipment pressures, voltages and levels, run times, process flows, chemical usage and inventory.
- Make necessary adjustments on automatic and manual control equipment to ensure efficient operations.
- Ability to stop, start and operate all equipment for manual operation during the loss of control communications.
- Document and report irregularities and abnormal conditions of equipment and process variations to Master Control Operator.
- Perform routine in-plant lab test to determine process requirements for plant processes and operations.
- Analyze test results and adjust chemicals and processes to maintain maximum performance and efficiency.
- Perform Lock-Out-Tag-Out per SOP (Standard Operating Procedures)
- Oversee chemical off loads at designated locations and tanks.
- Verify all documentation is accurate and complete.
- Inspect and verify facility buildings, grounds and perimeters are secure.
- Perform general maintenance including, but not limited to, general housekeeping and painting assignments as requested.
- Must be able to work overtime as circumstances require and share on-call responsibilities
- Perform testing requirements on septic hauler loads when directed.
- Other duties as assigned by Master Control Operator and or Shift Supervisor.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Must possess high school diploma or equivalent
- Required to obtain and hold a valid Class I Indiana Wastewater Plant Operators license within 18 months of hire
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Requires the ability to carry out verbal and written instructions
- Must have the ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees
- Must pass a heat stress test if requested
- Must be able to work overtime as circumstances require and share on-call responsibilities
- Must maintain a valid Indiana Driver’s License
Preferred Skills/Qualifications
- Must have working knowledge of wastewater plants, incinerators, liquids and solids processing, including computerized SCADA controls
- Valid Class I Indiana Wastewater Plant Operators license
- 1 to 3 years of experience in wastewater treatment area or college coursework in environmental services
- Class B CDL
