Internship Description
Class Title: Recreation Program Intern
Compensation: $15.00 per hour
Department: Department of Parks and Recreation
Bureau: Recreation
GENERAL PURPOSE
To assist in the daily operations of the Department of Parks and Recreation programs and events.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the supervision of the Recreation Program Specialist, Operations Manager and / or the Director of Parks and Recreation and Administrative Supervisor as needed.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
None
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
" Assist in the development and the daily operations of summer recreation programs and events, including adult and youth leagues, cultural, art, aquatics, sports and educational programs.
" Work closely with office clerical staff, aquatics and Summer Playground Program managers and referee/umpire assignors.
" Assist with daily customer service inquiries, pavilion and field rentals as needed.
" Keep abreast of new developments in the field of recreation through regular training and professional development.
" Assist with the production of the bi-annual Adventure Allentown publication.
" Conduct surveys and essential functions related to program and recreational developments.
" May apply for program and marketing awards to help distinguish the department.
" Meets the attendance requirements of the position, which calls for a flexible work schedule, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
" Provide quality and effective customer service with courtesy and understanding to City customers, citizens and internal departments.
" Plans and implements short athletics-related lesson plans at summer playground sites during the summer months.
" Performs related work as may be required.

Education and Experience
Requires intensive daily use of personal computer, telephone, copier, scanner, and other office equipment.

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent, and/or,
- Pursuing Associates or bachelor's degree in Recreation, Park and Tourism Management or a related field at an accredited University; and
- Possess a valid Pennsylvania driver's license
- Certified in CPR and first aid training, preferred
- Ability to exercise strong customer service skills.
- Strong knowledge of all Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to market and advertise effectively on the internet (websites/social media).
- Ability to cooperate with private and public agencies and general public to organize and conduct effective programs.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to deal with and interact with the public using diplomacy.
- Ability to develop marketing materials.
- Ability to keep and organize detailed records.
- Interact effectively with school age children, teachers and principals.
- Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with individuals and groups with diplomacy and professionalism.
- Exercise sound judgment and flexibility.
- Knowledge of arithmetic computations and tabulations and make calculations with speed and accuracy.
- Ability to understand and follow moderately complex oral and written instructions.
- Ability to prioritize work assignments, handle multiple tasks and projects, resulting in work being performed in the most efficient and timely manner.
- Excellent problem solving skills.
