What are the responsibilities and job description for the ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT I - CIRCULATION CLERK position at City of Amarillo?
ENTRY LEVEL SALARY: $26,478 per year. ($12.73 per hour.) Full City benefits.
Library Circulation Clerks manage the lending process by issuing cards to patrons, checking materials in and out, and handling renewals and holds. They provide customer service by answering questions and assisting with inquiries, processing payments for fines and fees, and maintaining accurate patron records. Circulation Clerks may also supervise part-time staff in the absence of the Branch Librarian, generate cash reports, decorate their department, and ensure materials are properly shelved.

- Excellent Customer Service and Teamwork Skills: Provides prompt, friendly, and courteous assistance to patrons both in person and over the phone. Addresses general inquiries and effectively refers patrons to appropriate departments or staff members. Works collaboratively with library staff to contribute positively to the work environment. Meticulous in maintaining accurate records and handling special loans.
- Knowledge of Library Operations: Understands circulation policies, loan periods, renewals, holds, fines, and the interlibrary loan processes. Familiar with library management systems for data entry, issuing cards to patrons, and materials processing.
- Technical Knowledge: Proficient in using computers, telephones, credit card terminals, and standard office equipment. Able to handle non-automated circulation statistics.
- Cash Handling Skills: Experienced in processing payments, making change, issuing receipts for fines and fees, and handling credit card transactions. Capable of preparing cash reports.
- Effective Communication Skills: Capable of notifying patrons about holds, overdue items, or damaged materials with strong verbal and written skills.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Promptly reports maintenance issues and quickly adapts to new situations.
- Organizational Ability: Accurately sorts and shelves library materials. Efficiently manages multiple tasks such as processing materials and handling patron requests.
- Strong Clerical Abilities: Skilled in record-keeping, maintaining patron and item records. Able to prepare statistical reports, submit time sheets, and complete administrative forms.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from a standard high school or an equivalency degree such as a GED is required. At least one year of prior customer service experience is required, and one year of clerical experience plus the ability to type at the rate of not less than 30 words per minute is preferred. Must be able to utilize independent judgment and maintain accuracy and speed. Additionally, must be able to spell, alphabetize, and use correct grammar.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position requires evening and some weekend work (one night per week, alternating Fridays and Saturdays, and one Sunday every four weeks). Full performance of duties requires physical stamina. Circulation clerks must stand for considerable periods of time, lift and carry stacks of books weighing up to 20 pounds, and push loaded book trucks for short distances – all of which requires agility in stooping, lifting, and bending.
