What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineering Intern position at City of Battle Ground?
The position is temporary and is budgeted for full-time work for a period of up to 3 months.
The principal function of this position is to provide students of undergraduate engineering studies with professional engineering experience in a public sector organization as a complement to the student's undergraduate studies. This position assists engineers in the application of principles, methods and techniques of civil engineering technology. The work is performed with other engineering department staff, and under the direct supervision of the City Engineer.

- Execute field measurements and basic calculations
- Perform asset condition inspections in the field
- Visit construction sites and verify work is in conformance with plans and specifications
- Observe construction and inspection, as requested
- Complete miscellaneous office tasks which may include: data entry, filing, technical research, and gathering of information
- Scan and file documents and drawings
- Provide record drawing information as requested
- Respond to phone calls and emails from residents
- Prepare exhibits and other documents
- Ability to work outside in all types of weather conditions and access construction sites which may have uneven terrain
- Ability to work around moving traffic, work in active right-of-way and construction areas
- CAD drafting
- Timely and regular attendance.
- Follow/adhere to all city policies and procedures, and safety program regulations and requirements.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Knowledge of:
- Civil engineering principles, practices and methods
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD
- Computer literacy in AutoCAD, Microsoft Office programs such as Word & Excel, and other standard office software and equipment.
Ability to:
- Ability to prepare, organize and maintain engineering field and office data, reports and systems.
- Ability to effectively and tactfully communicate technical and non-technical information, orally and in writing, to contractors, developers, property owners, employees, consultants, other governmental agency representatives, city officials and the general public.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships among co-workers and other City personnel, contractors, consultants, and the general public.

- At least two years of college education in the engineering field and be within one to two years of graduation
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Work is primarily performed in an office setting but some outdoor work is required with the inspection of various land use developments, construction sites or public works facilities. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet while in the office and moderately loud when in the field. Walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time. Visual acuity to read computer screens.
