Essential Job Functions: Conducts elementary legal research; drafts pleadings, motions, and Attorney General letters; transcribes witness statements; summarizes discovery documents; electronically files pleadings, motions, etc., with state and county courts; scans, manages, and maintains database of departmental files; coordinates witness scheduling and meetings; responds to citizens inquiries; performs secretarial duties of a specialized, confidential and complex nature; responsible for confidential material; composes and/or transcribes correspondence and a variety of legal documents; maintains calendar of case events; answers telephone and routes calls.

Work indoors in a normal office environment. Must be available to work overtime as needed.Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of legal practices, procedures, terminology, and form; knowledge of Texas E-Filing System; thorough knowledge of secretarial practices and procedures; knowledge of business English, spelling, grammar, arithmetic and vocabulary; thorough knowledge of office practices, procedures, systems and equipment; knowledge of general municipal operations and organizations; thorough knowledge of software including WordPerfect for Windows and Microsoft Word and EXCEL; knowledge of IBM iSeries (AS/400) financial, payroll and purchasing software preferred; knowledge of law publications.
Skills/Abilities: Ability to operate modern office machinery; ability to set up and type a variety of letters, reports and records; ability to input data accurately and in a timely manner; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions with minimal supervision; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public; ability to operate a calculator; ability to type 40-45 wpm on a personal computer preferred; ability to work in an office environment with frequent interruptions by the telephone. Bilingual helpful.
Physical Requirements: Constantly sees and hears; frequently operates a computer, answers telephone, enters data, sits, lifts and carries objects weighing up to 10 lbs., uses a calculator, operates a printer, fax machine, files, sorts, types, writes by hand, stands, walks, bends; infrequently lifts objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
Education/Experience: Graduation from high school or equivalent supplemented by two (2) years of office clerical experience in a fast-paced environment; minimum of six (6) months actual work experience utilizing Microsoft Office and WordPerfect; knowledge of the IBM iSeries system preferred; six (6) months experience in data entry; experience answering a multi-line phone with heavy load of incoming calls preferred; must have excellent grammar skills.
Typing test from 40-45 wpm preferred; Data entry test at 80 kspm preferred. Must possess a valid Class C driver's license with a good driving record. Other state valid Driver’s License equivalent to Texas Class C with a good driving record will be considered. Texas state law requires within 30 days of residency, you must possess a valid Texas driver’s license. Applicant selected for hire will be subject to a background investigation and drug/alcohol screen test.
