Job Summary

The Recreation Program Coordinator at Highland Community Center is responsible for designing, facilitating, and overseeing a wide range of adaptive and general recreation programs, activities, day camps, and events. This dynamic role requires staff to actively engage with and supervise participants, leading groups ranging from 10 to 30 individuals in various recreational settings. Work Schedule

This position is a 40-hour work week that will include working Saturdays and evenings to cover recreation programs which is essential to meet the diverse and changing requirements of the programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Program Coordination and Leadership : Coordinate and collaborate with volunteers, citizens, and other stakeholders to deliver recreational programs. Lead and facilitate a variety of recreational activities, including art, dance, performing arts, games, sports, fitness, crafts, and special events.
  • Staffing and Volunteer Management : Recruit, hire, train, and evaluate program staff and volunteers. Provide ongoing support and feedback to ensure effective program delivery and staff development.
  • Budgeting and Resource Management : Ensure adherence to assigned budget. Assist in securing additional funding through grants, sponsorships, and donations. Order and maintain equipment and supplies for recreation activities, ensuring their availability and functionality.
  • Program Marketing and Promotion : Market recreational programs through newsletters, flyers, social media, and other communication channels.
  • Program Development and Evaluation : Design, implement, and continually assess programs to meet the evolving needs and interests of participants. Modify programs as necessary to ensure inclusiveness and accessibility.
  • Event Planning and Coordination : Assist in the planning and coordination of special events, aiming to increase community involvement and engagement
  • Supervision and Participant Engagement : Supervise and engage with program participants to ensure their safety, enjoyment, and personal development. Foster socialization, skill-building, and wellness through active participation.
  • Inclusive and Adaptive Practices : Ensure that programs are inclusive, adaptive, and accessible for diverse populations, including individuals with physical disabilities, youth, and older adults.
  • Supervision Received and Exercised

  • Works under general supervision with a degree of independence in carrying out responsibilities.
  • Exercises supervision over contractors, temporary, and seasonal staff as assigned. Provides guidance, feedback, and training to ensure staff performance meets program standards.

  • Proficient in conflict resolution and problem-solving, ensuring smooth program operations and participant satisfaction.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to interact with diverse individuals both verbally and in writing.
  • Effective time management and the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to lead and manage groups of 10-30 participants in various recreational settings.
  • Capability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Ability to plan, execute, and evaluate recreational programs that promote physical, social, and emotional wellness among participants.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in coordinating activities, resources, and events.
  • Ability to adapt and modify activities to meet the diverse needs of participants and create an inclusive environment.
  • Education, Experience, and Other Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in recreation, human services, or a related field.
  • A minimum of four years of progressively responsible experience in recreation programming or a related area, with a demonstrated track record of success in program development and management.
  • Equivalent combination of education, experience, and training may be considered.
  • CPR / First Aid and Bloodborne Pathogens certification will be required for this position.
  • Valid Driver's license
  • Ability to drive the city van & operate a wheelchair lift

    Employees are offered a choice of medical coverage through the City's self-insured Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plan or Kaiser Permanente (HMO).

    Employees are offered a choice of two dental carriers with plans that offer regular checkups, x-rays, fillings, and crowns. Orthodontia is available through one of the carriers.

    Vision

    Employees are offered a choice of vision coverage through an annual exam-only plan or a buy-up plan which includes an annual eye exam and hardware coverage.
