GENERAL PURPOSE:
To oversee, direct and supervise the youth summer camp as stated through Belton Parks and Recreation
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by the individual in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties as assigned.
- Supervises part-time and seasonal summer camp staff such as camp counselors and camp participants. May also supervise temporary employees, community service workers, or volunteers, as requested by the Summer Camp Director and/or the Recreation Superintendent.
- Implement the Summer Camp Director’s curriculum for Belton Parks and Recreation’s summer camp program.
- Organize, and supervise camp counselors for the duration of the shift assigned.
- Assist the Summer Camp Director with overseeing the distribution and collection of forms, letters and pertinent documents needed for the implementation of the camp curriculum to the councilors and parents. This must include proper documentation of participants/staff members with allergies and all emergency situations.
- Oversee the camps check in and check out process of each camp participants and ensure every child is properly supervised during this process.
- Will aid in the supervision of the camp counselors training as mandated by the Summer Camp Director.
- Must be available to give breaks to the staff. Must also aide in the supervision of the children when emergencies arise (i.e., when camp participants need a “potty break,” when a participant gets a bee sting and need to be escorted to another facility etc.)
- Must be present in weekly informational meetings with the Recreation Manager, Recreation Supervisor, Summer Camp Director, and other Assistant Directors to inform them of the plan of the upcoming week and understand the delegated tasks to make the program successful.
- Must supervise all camp counselors and camp participants on field trips.
- Must be a liaison between summer camp personnel and the summer camp participants, as well as a liaison between camp counselors and the Summer Camp Director.
- Must be present at the end of year reflection meeting to give insight on how to improve the following years camp.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Must work closely with the Summer Camp Director, Recreation Superintendent, and Recreation Supervisor on the curriculum set forth.
- Must be able to defuse tricky situations which may arise within the longer hours of a structured camp setting. Must be able to provide emotional support for all participants/staff members within the camp structure when needed.
- Must attend meetings and training courses as needed to understand all aspects of the department.
Education and Experience:
- Experience in early childhood learning or related fields of study.
- Experience leading early education programs are preferred.
- Must have availability for the entirety of the program.
- Current CPR, First Aid, and AED or the ability to complete before working with the program.
Physical Requirements:
- Employee may be asked to lift/move items between 25 – 50 pounds for tasks such as (but not limited to) lifting project materials, distributing project materials, bending/twisting/turning in athletic movements with the children or participating with children within a multifaceted program.
- Must have the ability to swim, and the ability to help children and/or others in and out of the pool.
- Must maintain a physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include working closely with others, elevated levels of public contact, and close interaction with children.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk; and use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls.
- The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.
- The employee occasionally works in highs, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic chemicals.
- The employee is occasionally exposed to the risk of electrical shock.
- The working environment is moderately loud.
- This job, at times, requires the employee to work outdoors, and within the elements of the outdoors. Workers will be responsible for their own protection from all elements of the outdoors while working during camp events.
