GENERAL PURPOSE:
To oversee, direct and supervise the youth summer camp as stated through Belton Parks and Recreation
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by the individual in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties as assigned.
- Works under the general supervision of the Recreation Superintendent and the Recreation Supervisor.
- Supervises part-time and seasonal summer camp staff such as camp counselors and the summer camp assistant directors.
- May supervise temporary employees, community service workers, or volunteers, as requested by the Recreation Superintendent and the Recreation Supervisor.
- Develop and direct an age-appropriate curriculum for Belton Parks and Recreation’s Summer Camp program.
- Assist the Recreation staff in establishing an operating budget for the camp and helps control expenditures.
- Develops forms, letters and pertinent documents needed for the implementation of the camp curriculum. This must include proper documentation of participants/staff members with allergies and all possible emergency situations.
- May assist in acquiring staff under the supervision of the Recreation Superintendent and the Recreation Supervisor. The Summer Camp Director will play a pivotal role in training, and supervising staff.
- Produces work schedules for all part-time and seasonal summer camp staff such as Summer Camp Assistant Directors, Summer Camp Counselors and other staff members assigned to the Summer Camp program.
- Prepare timecards for payroll using ExecuTime.
- Must conduct weekly informational meetings with the Recreation Superintendent, Recreation Supervisor and Assistant Directors to inform them of the plan of the upcoming week, and to delegate the necessary tasks to make the program successful.
- Must collaborate with various community service programs and constituents to provide quality field trips which will fit into the operating budget.
- Must be a liaison between all Summer Camp personnel and Summer Camp participant parents, as well as a liaison between parents and Belton Parks and Recreation.
- Must be present in the end of year reflection meeting in an effort to improve the following year’s camp.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Must work closely with Recreation Superintendent and Recreation Supervisor on the curriculum set forth.
- Must be able to defuse tricky situations which may arise within the longer hours of a structured camp setting. Must be able to provide emotional support for all participants/staff members within the camp structure when needed.
- Must attend meetings and training courses as needed to understand all aspects of the department.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor of Education degree, Bachelor in Youth Studies or a bachelor’s degree in a related
- field is preferred.
- Current primary school teacher, or early education teacher with experience in planning
- multifaceted programs.
- Must have availability for the entirety of the program.
- Current CPR, First Aid, and AED are preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Employee may be asked to lift/move items between 25 – 50 pounds for tasks such as (but not limited to) lifting project materials, distributing project materials, bending/twisting/turning in athletic movements with the children or participating with children within a multifaceted program.
- Must have the ability to swim, and the ability to help children and/or others in and out of the pool.
- Must maintain a physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include working closely with others, elevated levels of public contact, and close interaction with children.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk; and use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls.
- The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Physical Requirements:
- While performing duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.
- Occasionally, it may be wet, humid, hot, cold, as well as moderately loud.
- At times, requires the employee to work outdoors, and within the elements of the outdoors.
- Workers will be responsible for their own protection from all elements of the outdoors while working during camp events. Moreover, facilities may not possess favorable air conditioning
- thus, workers must be responsible for hydration and or proper clothing to adhere to the
- elements the day provides.
