JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Summary
The City of Bluefield is seeking a full-time Maintenance person for the Parks and Recreation Department to perform a variety of duties as needed to maintain a clean, attractive and safe environment. This position will perform a variety of maintenance duties and custodial support, and could assist with special projects outside of the Parks and Recreation facilities. Must have a valid driver’s license. Will report to the Maintenance Supervisor.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Provide support to the maintenance supervisor in daily technical duties.
- Inventory and ordering of cleaning supplies, pool supplies and other general supplies as needed for the facilities.
- All aspects of pool maintenance with special attention to daily chemical checks, recording and adjustments as required by the health department. CPO (Chemical Pool Operator) certification required or must be able to obtain in the first six months on the job.
- Routine maintenance of all fitness and athletic equipment.
- Routine maintenance of trails to include clean-up, tree removal, sign installation and other maintenance as needed.
- Routine maintenance of Mitchell Stadium turf field to include repairs, dragging and other maintenance as needed.
- Parks and playground maintenance repairs as needed.
- Maintains and stores tools and equipment properly.
- Provide support to the custodial and part time maintenance staff to include cleaning, sweeping, mopping, dusting, polishing, cleaning glass, vacuuming; scrubbing, spot cleaning carpets and disinfecting; emptying, cleaning and lining waste receptacles, disposing of trash, and cleans glass; frequent attention to restrooms and dressing rooms.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned at various locations.
Skills/Abilities
- This position must have the ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools to perform duties including tree cutting and removal, grass mowing, weedeating, shoveling, sweeping, raking, mechanical assistance, lifting, pushing, and pulling of various objects.
- Ability to operate a tractor with front-loader.
- Knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry preferred.
- Ability to work and manage duties independently.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written instructions of supervisor and adhere to company policies and safety guidelines.

The position lifts objects, walks, stands, and performs physical labor. The employee lifts, pushes, pulls or carries objects up to 80 pounds; uses abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support. The position requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination. The position requires the ability to quickly move arms and legs. The employee must have good stamina.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to extreme weather, noise, and moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at various locations. The noise level in the work environment and job sites could be loud. The position may work near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.
Education/Certifications
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred but not required.
- CPO (Chemical Pool Operator) certification required or must be able to obtain in the first six months on the job.
- Valid Driver’s License

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Schedule will require covering for other shift when necessary to include evenings, weekends, and holidays, dependent on need.
Rate of Pay
Starting pay $15.00 per hour with 6 month performance and wage review.
