ONLY CURRENT CITY OF BREMERTON FIRE DEPARTMENT EMPLOYEES ARE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY.Under the general direction of the Battalion Chief, serves as a company officer, supervising personnel (Firefighters and Firefighter/Paramedics) assigned to a specific fire station on a specific shift. A Station Captain is responsible for the overall administration of his/her assigned station. This includes the daily operation and maintenance including the personnel, apparatus, and equipment assigned to that specific Station on a particular shift. This supervisory position requires a versatile team member capable of planning, supervising, and participating in firefighting readiness, suppression, emergency services delivery, and administrative activities of a City fire station.The Station Captain will possess interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills. This position requires knowledge of City organization and administration, computer information systems and associated office software, budgetary planning, and financial accountability. Works closely and coordinates with other Division managers in the accomplishment of Department goals and objectives.Responds to emergency incidents as a command officer. Determines appropriate action and response to incidents and directs operation to assure the safe, efficient, and effective development of personnel, equipment, and resources until relieved by an appropriate higher ranking officer. This position requires the ability to adapt and overcome multiple situations (both hazardous and non-hazardous) utilizing resources in a safe, efficient, and productive manner which accomplishes the City's mission.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

The omission of specific statements does not exclude them from the position).Responsible for all the duties of a Lieutenant (see job description).Respond to fire incidents, mass casualty incidents, natural disasters and other emergency incidents, serving as an active member of the incident management system (IMS) up to and including serving as the incident commander effectively mitigating the incident until relieved by an appropriate higher ranking officer.Monitor and ensure delivery of training programs for subordinate personnel and participate in training activities. Works cooperatively with the Shift Battalion Chief and the Training Division to identify training needs and deficiencies.Writes reports and ensures proper completion of all required reports for emergency activities and routine reports concerning the use and condition of apparatus, related equipment, and supplies.Prepares and administers performance evaluations of personnel assigned to his/her company. Provides guidance to achieve career development goals. Motivates personnel to correct deficiencies through positive coaching and mentorship.Assists personnel in improving personal effectiveness (time management, stress management, and personal professional development).The Station Captain serves as a positive role model that adheres to department policies and procedures. The Station Captain works cooperatively to provide input and assist in the implementation of department goals and objectives.Accountable for station standardization and coordination of tasks, preparedness, and response. The Station Captains work cooperatively with the Shift Battalion Chiefs to develop intra-station and intra-shift standardization.Develop annual budget proposals related to assigned areas of responsibility and make recommendations for applicable purchases. Assists in preparation with management regarding the capital improvement plan to that assigned station.Outlines schedules for his/her assigned station for the cleaning, repair and maintenance of fire equipment, apparatus, building, fixtures, furniture and landscaping grounds. Works cooperatively with the assigned project manager to accomplish aforementioned tasks.Inventories and orders supplies and equipment as needed for his/her assigned station.Attends staff meetings as required to discuss policies, rules, regulations, budget items, and personnel problems, including discipline matters.Conducts monthly inspections of station equipment, apparatus and facilities to ensure safety and cleanliness, overseeing their maintenance and repair, ensuring that all emergency pumping equipment, tools and apparatus are in service ready condition forwarding to Shift Battalion Chief.Communicates with a culturally diverse community in a tactful and effective manner.Engages in public relations and education activities.Maintains physical condition through participation in physical fitness activities.Other DutiesRegular attendance is an essential requirement.Performs related work as assigned and/or required.
