THE POSITION

Under supervision, the Recreation Specialist will assist in the planning, organizing, implementing, and marketing of a community service and / or recreation program and to provide technical staff assistance. The incumbent may exercise skill and experience in a particular area of recreation programming and may be assigned to : aquatics, preschool, fitness, or facilities. Based on the assignment, additional training, certifications and / or licenses may be required. The current vacancy is within the Facilities division.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate for the current vacancy in the Facilities division is enthusiastic, energetic, and engaging with a proven ability to interact effectively with customers, co-workers and staff. This individual will bring a high level of skill and experience with registration software, along with strong record-keeping abilities and exceptional attention to detail. With experience managing facilities and room rental on an ongoing basis, they will demonstrate a strong capacity to work closely with clients to ensure seamless event and rental execution. The ideal candidate will also be skilled at managing a diverse group of facility users, ensuring their needs are met and fostering a welcoming environment. Additionally, the successful candidate will possess the leadership skills required to guide a team of building attendants, overseeing all aspects of the comunity center operations, and leading ongoing training efforts to ensure the highest standards of service and facility maintenance.

Example of Duties

Typical duties include, but are not limited to :

  • Assist in the planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating of a community service and / or recreation program.
  • Interact with participants, parents, and community members while supervising recreation facilities.
  • Oversee the use of facilities ensuring participants conform to the established policies and procedures.
  • Prepare community service and recreation publicity related to assigned programs and disseminate approved publicity.
  • Prepare reports; maintain files and records related to the program.
  • Make contractual recommendations to supervisors.
  • Order program supplies and materials and inventory equipment.
  • Respond to requests for information and program complaints.
  • Provide audio / visual support for room rentals and custodial service.
  • Coordinate rental reservations and coordination of event set up.
  • Provide first aid for minor injuries to participants and the public.
  • Assist in the training, supervision, and evaluation of assigned contract or hourly staff.
  • Perform related tasks / duties as required

Facilities Program Duties (in addition to the duties listed above) :

  • Respond to inquiries regarding room rentals and perform tours as needed by clients.
  • Assist with contract development for rental clients and event needs.
  • Execute accurate set-ups for events and custodial needs on day of event
  • Qualifications

    Education and Experience :

  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. One year of experience directly related to recreation programs and services.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid California Class C driver's license
  • Ability to :

  • Assist in the development and coordination of a recreation program suited to the needs of a diverse community.
  • Follow oral and written instructions. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Perform manual work; maintain assigned areas and equipment.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Have exposure to a variety of weather conditions and elements.
  • Move objects between 20 and 50 pounds for short distances.
  • Work various shifts, including early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Knowledge of :

  • Methods, techniques, and procedures in the planning and delivery of recreation programs.
  • Common recreational and social needs of various age groups.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Analyze, interpret, and explain program policies and procedures.

  • Retirement : CalPERS - Formula dependent on hire date and member status in CalPERS. Please see our for more information.
  • Health Insurance : Effective January 1, 2024, the monthly Cafeteria Plan Allowance will be based on selected level of coverage, as follows : Employee Only Coverage : $986.84; Employee Plus One Coverage : $1,973.68, Employee Plus Family : $2,565.78 to use towards a CalPERS medical plan or cash out opt : $750 / month.
  • Vision / Dental Insurance : The City pays the monthly premium for employees and their eligible dependents through VSP and Delta Dental.
  • Deferred Compensation : City contributes $50 per pay period Mission Square Retirement 457 Plan available
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA) : City will contribute $30.76 to a FSA which can be used for IRS eligible medical or dependent care expenses. Effective the first pay period in July 2023, the City will increase the FSA contribution by $25 per period for a total of $55.76 per period. Effective the first pay period in July 2024, the City will increase the FSA contribution by $25 per period for a total of $80.76 per period
  • VEBA Plan (Voluntary Employee Benefit Association) : City contributes $69.24 per pay period
  • Vacation : Accruals are based on length of service. Employees can earn 11-21 days of vacation based on years of service.
  • Sick : Accrued at an unlimited rate of 3.69 hours of sick leave per pay period.
  • Life Insurance : $50,000 $50,000 AD&D Life Rate is .27 cents per $1,000 : AD&D rate is .04 cents per $1,000
  • Long Term Disability Insurance : The plan provides for 2 / 3 of monthly base salary up to a salary maximum of $4,500 per month. The maximum benefit is $3,000 per month. Elimination Period is the first 30 days of each disability. City pays entire premium.
  • Holiday : Receive 10 paid holidays and 5 days of floating holiday.
  • Tuition Reimbursement : $3,000 per fiscal year
  • Bilingual Pay : $100 / pay period if eligible.
  • Please Note : The benefits listed above are based on full-time equivalent (FTE) status. Part-time employees receive a prorated portion of benefits relative to their FTE status.
