Jefferson-Madison Regional Library is seeking candidates to be considered for full-time and part-time Makerspace Lab Support Staff  positions for the Central  Library who are highly motivated and who support JMRL's Mission Statement to foster personal growth and life-long learning for all by connecting people with ideas, information, and each other. 

The preferred starting salary for this position is $15.00 hourly.  Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience and internal equity. The  full-time, non-exempt position provides excellent benefits including 13 paid holidays, plus paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, City's retirement options, gym membership reimbursement, and continuing education/training opportunities. The part-time, non-exempt position provides pro-rated benefits.

  • The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS; however, the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS and there are certain provisions that must be met. This position performs responsible clerical work in the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library Central Library’s Computer Lab, under the general supervision of the Supervisory Technology Services Librarian.

  • Mans the makerspace and digital media lab; assists patrons on library computers, printers, and makerspace lab equipment.
  • Monitors behavior of patrons and takes appropriate action.
  • Informs patrons of library policies and procedures.
  • Answers questions from lab patrons and telephone inquiries.
  • May be asked to assist at other library service desks.
  • Troubleshoots minor problems with hardware and software.
  • Reports facility and equipment maintenance and repair needs.
  • Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of JMRL equipment, tools, and other resources, including work time.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
Other Duties:
  • Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as apparent or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates may qualify by demonstrating the required knowledge and skills outlined for the job through experience(s) other than formal education.

  • High School diploma or GED and 3 months of experience working with the public in a customer service environment, and experience working with relevant hardware and software.
OR
  • 2 years of experience working with the public in a customer service environment, and experience working with relevant hardware and software.
OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.

Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements
  • Required to successfully pass a pre-employment background check

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS: 
Job Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in use of various computer platforms and software, internet, and basic search skills.
  • Knowledge of Internet and use of basic searching skills.
  • Knowledge of hardware and software troubleshooting with in-house devices.
  • Knowledge of library policies and procedures.
Reading:
  • Intermediate: Ability to read and understand written materials such as newspapers, magazines, journals, multi-step instruction manuals, and reference materials.
Writing:
  • Basic: Ability to write simple letters, paragraphs and sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses.
Communication Skills:
  • Basic: Provide standard information to and interacts with others outside direct reporting relationships on procedures or general policies. Interaction requires recognizing different points of view to ensure understanding and appropriate response. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with co-workers and customers. Requires good telephone etiquette.
Independence and Decision-Making:
  • Requires General Direction: Normally performs the job by following general instructions or established standard operating procedures and/or policies.  There is some discretion when making decisions among a few easily identifiable choices of the appropriate procedure or policy to apply to duties.  Performance is reviewed frequently.
Technical Skills:
  • Skilled: Comprehensive, practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities appropriate to the assigned and apparent job responsibilities. Intermediate skill in Microsoft Office applications and/or departmental software.

  • Strong public services orientation.
  • Frequent change of tasks.
  • Working closely with others as part of a team.
  • Takes responsibility for finding answers to questions and responding appropriately.
  • Constant interruptions and requests for service 
  • May require dealing with angry, frustrated and/or upset individuals.
Physical Demands:
  • Light Work: Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. 
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
  • Must be able to communicate information and ideas so others will understand.  Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Ability to observe details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
Machines, Tools, Equipment, Software and Hardware:
  • Typically requires use of standard office equipment and telephone, and related software and hardware; and any other equipment as appropriate or as assigned.  
Work Environment:
  • Work is performed in office environment where there may be exposure to computer screen for extended periods of time, monitor glare and dust.   
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
