What are the responsibilities and job description for the Irrigation Technician position at City of Clovis, NM?
Under general supervision this position involves technical and skilled labor in the installation, maintenance, and repair of irrigation systems on City property. Normal hours of work are 6:30 am to 2:30 pm, Monday through Friday with periodic schedule adjustments.
**This position has been classified as a safety sensitive position and is subject to our drug testing policy to include pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident for the following prohibited substances: marijuana, amphetamines, opioids, phencyclidine (PCP), and cocaine, as well as any drug not approved for medical use by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. **
- Inspect, install, diagnose, repair, and maintain irrigation system within Park properties; provide a high level of maintenance for turf and landscaping areas within the Parks.
- Performs general technical and preventive maintenance on irrigation systems to ensure system is maintained in proper operating condition.
- Maintains equipment safety checklists and logs.
- Assists in the attainment of department goals and objectives related to Master, Strategic and Comprehensive Plans.
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly with City Administration, department directors, consultants, vendors, staff, and the public to provide quality services. Participates in various projects.
- Keeps immediate supervisor fully and accurately informed on issues. Identifies areas of concern for management review and potential action.
- Assists and participates in the execution of short and long-range plans.
- Ensures effective and efficient use of budgeted funds, personnel, materials, facilities, and time.
- Assists with other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
One (1) year experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of irrigation and/or one (1) year Plumbing experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that would likely produce the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Licenses and Certificates:
Valid driver’s license equivalent to a New Mexico Class D.
MS-6– Journeyman Sprinkler License within 6 months of hire.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Municipal organization operations, policies, and procedures.
- Tools, equipment, materials, and methods used to perform job functions.
- OSHA safety standards relating to Park and Recreation.
- Knowledge of basic principles and practices of installing and maintaining irrigation systems.
Skills in:
- Use of hand and power tools and other parks maintenance equipment.
- Effective verbal communication.
Ability to:
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with vendors, City staff, and the public.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Orally communicate clearly and concisely.
Physical Requirements
Stand or sit for prolonged periods of time. Occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist. Lift, carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight. Use repetitive hand movements, fine coordination and manual dexterity which permits the employee to operate hand and power tools and larger mowers, spreaders, and loaders. Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing to permit the employee to discern verbal instructions, use a phone, radio, and communicate with others and drive and operate motorized vehicles. Sufficient visual acuity which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions.
Working Conditions
Work typically performed outdoors with frequent travel to various sites and facilities. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Occasional work beyond normal business hours. Required to work in or with water, on slippery or uneven surfaces, airborne particles, potentially toxic and/or caustic chemicals, and extreme temperatures, travel from site to site, work around traffic. Use of safety shoes, glasses and other equipment is required. Position is subject to drug testing and regular driver’s license monitoring in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Clovis policies.
