What are the responsibilities and job description for the GIS Analyst position at City of College Station?
Under general supervision of the Assistant Director, the GIS Analyst provides analytical services to the Parks & Recreation using the Geographic Information System (GIS). Working in collaboration with the Information Technology (IT) GIS team, the GIS Analyst performs the following job duties: analyzing and digitizing spatial and tabular data to produce maps and related products; writing GIS computer scripts; creating database queries for GIS; and ensuring data integrity by performing continuous maintenance activities to enhance and update the Enterprise GIS.
- Maintain the Enterprise GIS by inputting and correcting data, researching data conversions, establishing data specifications, updating resources (maps, databases, and scanned images), and ensuring data accuracy.
- Maintain Cityworks Asset Management System and work in collaboration with the IT GIS team to implement new asset management technologies and best practices.
- Integrate and perform analyses on spatial and tabular data from a variety of sources and other applications, create database queries, and develop reports utilizing a variety of data sources.
- Optimize tabular and database data for fastest performance using metrics and database tuning.
- Develop, design and edit custom templates, scripts, and macros to meet project parameters; and develop automation or customized routines to enhance GIS applications and increase inter-departmental productivity.
- Build and enhance web pages to effectively communicate the City’s GIS resources to others.
- Perform research, in collaboration with the IT GIS team to implement new GIS technology, software, and practices, including maintaining the skills, knowledge and abilities necessary to advance the GIS program.
- Facilitate the departmental development and implementation of protocols for the GIS/GPS systems.
- Serve as the departmental technical resource in providing support to internal and public GIS customers.
- Fulfill internal and external requests for GIS information to include developing graphic presentations, charts, graphs, and maps.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Spatial Science or related technical field and two (2) years or more years related experience using Geographic Information Systems. Possess and maintain a valid Texas Driver’s License. Knowledge and experience with MS Windows, Windows-based applications, ESRI ArcGIS, Trimble GPS, Visual Basic programming language, and SQL database language. Knowledge of fundamental GIS/GPS principles and practices. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Excellent customer service skills.
Preferred:
Five (5) years of GIS work experience. Master’s degree in GIS or GIS related field. Programming experience with VBA, ArcObjects, Python, SQL and XML.
