Job Description Summary

The purpose of this job is to lead an assigned work group involved in the construction, maintenance of streets, sidewalks, and city facilities / property. Trains employees and ensures the safety and quality of work group operations. Essential Duties and Responsibilities - The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description

  • Leads and coordinates the work of a group of employees; assigns and prioritizes tasks; guides employees with instruction or advice on tasks and assignments.
  • Performs skilled work of assigned work group.
  • Schedules routine maintenance on equipment.
  • Assists supervisors in coordinating activities.
  • Adheres to safety standards.
  • Operates a wide variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment associated with street construction and right of way maintenance.
  • Performs skilled labor tasks, such as inlet construction, setting concrete forms, placing concrete, and laying asphalt.
  • Manages and reviews job site safety components such as utility locates, work zone safety equipment and other safety procedures are followed by crew members. Monitors and acts upon work zone safety procedures.
  • Purchases tools, materials and supplies.
  • Performs snow removal and ice prevention.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
  • Regularly completes computer entries for work orders.
  • Ensures that qualified hazardous materials are utilized in a safe and appropriate manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • No supervisory authority. Work does require providing guidance and training to others.

  • May assist in the collection of data in support of recommendations for departmental budget allocations. May monitor work unit or program / promotional level budget and expenditures.
  • Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 3 to 5 years of related experience.
  • Licenses or Certifications

  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with no airbrake restriction.
  • Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certification.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position Knowledge of :

  • Concrete, asphalt and chipseal and other forms of pavement maintenance.
  • Standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of building trades.
  • Safety standards and precautions pertaining to maintenance and repair work.
  • Safety standards and precautions pertaining to operation and maintenance of a variety of equipment and tools.
  • Pavement marking, signing and other types of right of way maintenance needs.
  • Common business software applications such as Microsoft Office, Google Calendar, and Google Mail.
  • Skill in :

  • Operating and maintaining hand / power tools and motorized equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Operating light, medium, and heavy equipment.
  • Operating or repairing different types of specialized maintenance equipment, such as paint marking equipment, pavement repair equipment, mowers, sweepers or other equipment that are utilized for work groups.
  • Estimating time and materials needed to complete jobs.
  • Communicating verbally and in writing to meet the needs of the audience.
  • Ability to :

  • Work from blueprints, plans, and sketches.
  • Effectively plan and delegate the work of others and to train others.
  • Organize and prioritize work.
  • Handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure and maintain effective interpersonal relationships.

  • This position involves frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and / or hazards and majority of work is performed outside or with exposure to risk.
  • Incumbents may be required to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
  • Incumbents required to feel attributes of objects, grasp, push, stand, walk, drive, reach with hands / arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb / balance, operate mechanical equipment, and move up and down from / to sitting position on the floor.
  • Hours / Days subject to change but typically mid-April thru mid-October M-Th 6 to 4 : 30, otherwise M-F 7 to 3 : 30 Starting Salary $25.43 / hr - $30.40 / hr; Commensurate w / Training & Experience Pay Grade 108 Number of Positions Available 3 Deadline to Apply 02 / 10 / 2025 Open Until Filled No Special Instructions to Applicants Typicall mid-April thru mid-October M-Th 6 to 4 : 30, otherwise M-F 7 to 3 : 30 (subject to change)
