The City of Cupertino Parks and Recreation Department is hiring a Park Ranger in the Stevens Creek Corridor.

Definition:
Under general supervision, Park Rangers will engage and educate visitors to the Stevens Creek Corridor, including Blackberry Farm, McClellan Ranch, and the Environmental Education Center. Educational material will include nature restoration efforts, natural history, wildlife sightings, leash laws, and more. Park Rangers will plan and teach multiple Join-a-Ranger classes each calendar year, which may cover a variety of topics regarding local flora and fauna, as well as pertinent outdoor skills. Rangers will also lead annual creek tours of local elementary school classrooms in the spring and fall as well as pre-registered group visits year-round. Park Rangers will monitor and patrol the Stevens Creek Corridor daily, enforcing rules and City code when necessary, and performing trail maintenance as necessary.
 
Class Characteristics
Park Ranger is a year-round, part-time, temporary, non-benefited, and at-will position. It is also limited to no more than 995 hours per fiscal year. Applicants must possess all relevant certifications before the first day of employment.Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.

  • Creates lesson plans and leads interpretive Join-A-Ranger program throughout the year
  • Assists with the 3rd Grade Creek Tour program at McClellan Ranch Preserve, as well as Group Visits, by leading interpretive tours and educational programs 
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with Corridor visitors, providing accurate information at all times 
  • Interpret, explain, and enforce City Code as it relates to the Corridor, working with Code Enforcement and/or the Sheriff’s Office when necessary 
  • Maintains files, databases, and records related to enforcement issues and interactions with visitors 
  • Educates patrons and volunteers on natural history, habitat restoration, and local wildlife 
  • Performs trail maintenance such as trimming branches, weed whipping, leaf blowing, and cleaning graffiti 
  • Works in partnership with Public Works employees to ensure the parks and trails are well-maintained
  • Acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of park patrons in the event of an emergency
  • Assists with any issues related to traffic and parking 
  • Presents a professional appearance and attitude at all times
  • Maintains a high level of customer service
  • Performs other duties as required 
  • This is a year-round position

Ability to:
  • Must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials, and objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment
  • Must be responsible, alert, courteous, and punctual
  • Must be able to communicate with peers, supervisors, and patrons
  • Must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays
  • Must be able to provide own transportation to and from work
Education and Experience
  • Must have at least one year of park ranger experience or experience in a related field. Two years major course work in the field is preferred
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years old
Licenses and Certificates
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver’s License by time of appointment 
  • Must possess current Red Cross CPR/First Aid certification prior to the first day of employment
