The purpose of this position is to supervise operational tasks such as maintenance, recreational programming and services, concessions, budget operations and revenue collections of assigned areas.
This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences. Hours/shifts may vary Monday-Friday between 9:00AM – 9:00PM, and weekends 7:30AM – 9:00PM (Required to work nights, weekends and holidays to meet the business/program needs of the City. Hours may change based on operational needs.)

- Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
- Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
- Develops and conducts diversified recreational programs and services.
- Assists in the development and management of operating budgets.
- Researches and recommends changes in programs and operations.
- Prepares and maintains a variety of operational reports and revenue records.
- Supervises the collection of revenues from recreational programs, activities, special events and admissions; reports the progress and potential of revenue production through investigations or special studies; recommends changes in the quality of recreational programs and operations.
- Explains and interprets rules and regulations, fees, and recreational operations to park patrons; enforces or refers enforcement to proper authorities.
- Conducts periodic inspections of all park areas and facilities; observes efficiencies in operation, safety and condition; issues verbal and written directives to correct deficiencies.
- Creates flyers, press releases, newsletters, banners, etc., and promotes programs.
- Plans, organizes, supervises, and implements programs and specialized recreation activities, including arts and crafts, special needs programs, festivals, concerts, fairs, athletic leagues, tournaments, fitness programs, after school programs, dances, clinics, summer day camps, etc.
- Interacts and communicates with a variety of groups and individuals including department and City staff, community groups, volunteers, senior citizens, special needs population and the general public
- Ensures the safety of all programs, activity and event participants and providers by following City policies and procedures and monitoring participants' activity
- Monitors recreation facilities to ensure security, proper working order of equipment, cleanliness of area and other potential maintenance hazards
- Greets visitors to the office and recreational facilities
- Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment; requisitions supplies and equipment as necessary
- Assists in planning and monitoring programs for all ages
- Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice.
- Associates Degree in Parks and Recreation Management or related discipline.
- One (1) year of supervisory experience in managing sports/athletic programming and facilities, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
- First Aid/CPR within 6 months of employment.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Three years of sports/athletics programming experience.
- Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP)
- Certified Youth Sports Administrator (CYSA)
- Knowledge of the philosophy, objective, equipment requirements, and benefits of a diversified program of public recreation.
- Knowledge of the operational, safety and maintenance requirements of a park or recreational area.
- Knowledge of current trends and developments in the field of parks and recreation management.
- Knowledge of budget preparation and administration.
- Knowledge of the principles of supervision, organization and administration.
- Knowledge of the basic laws, rules and regulations relating to the use of facilities as applicable to City operations.
- Skill in budget analysis and financial/accounting principles.
- Skill in coordinating the work of others and prioritizing work assignments.
- Skill in resolving problems or situations requiring the exercise of good judgment.
- Skill in preparing clear and concise written reports.
- Skill in interpreting policies.
- Ability to manage large community parks with responsibility for designated areas of operation. Ability to prepare and maintain reports and conduct research and special studies.
- Ability to plan, direct, communicates and supervises the work of subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
- Ability to work with and supervise all age groups including seniors, adults, and youth, with and without special needs
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
