GENERAL SUMMARY: Under general supervision, the Library Custodian will keep the library building in clean and orderly condition; perform heavy cleaning duties, such as cleaning floors, shampooing rugs, washing walls and glass, and removing rubbish; tend furnace and boiler; perform routine maintenance activities; notify management of need for repairs; clean snow or debris from sidewalk; and perform other duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work in this class involves responsibility for performing a variety of tasks in the cleaning and minor maintenance of the library building, facility and grounds. Assignments are received orally or in writing from the Maintenance Supervisor and Administration Assistant who may inspect work while in progress and upon completion.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Duties require constant standing, walking, grasping/handing, and indoor work; frequent bending/stooping and twisting; and occasional kneeling, reaching, lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs. (assisted or unassisted), working outdoors in excessive heat or cold, driving vehicles/equipment, and pushing/pulling objects weighing up to 25 lbs. (assisted or unassisted).

- Monitor building premises to ensure occupant or visitor safety.
- Dispose of trash or waste materials; recycle materials.
- Prepare chemicals for work application.
- Confer with coworkers to coordinate maintenance or cleaning activities.
- Select equipment, materials, or supplies for cleaning or maintenance activities.
- Trim trees or other vegetation.
- Operate grounds maintenance equipment.
- Decorate indoor or outdoor spaces.
- Move and deliver furniture.
- Maintain equipment or systems to ensure proper functioning; records.
- Treat facilities to eliminate pests.
- Open, lock and ensure building security.
- Perform minor repairs to buildings and equipment.
- Provide information to the public.
- Report faulty equipment or hazards.
- Assist with room/building preparation for meetings or events.
- Service library material return boxes and provide delivery to all library outreach locations.

- Possession of a high school diploma or its equivalent.
- Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Iowa’s Driver’s License.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience in custodial and building maintenance.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
