What are the responsibilities and job description for the Library Teen Intern position at City of Forest Grove?
To explore careers in libraries by assisting library staff with tasks related to community outreach, library operations, and direct patron service. During their three-month internship, the individual will complete and present a connected learning project to identify and explore personal interests related to work in the library.
This paid, summer internship receives day-to-day supervision from the Teen Services Librarian, with support from Library Supervisors. This is an internship, anticipated to work 12-20 hours per week from June to August.
Supervision Received and exercised
Receives immediate supervision from the Teen Services Librarian.
- Contribute to the design and delivery of a connected learning project. Projects must have a community-facing element and relate to the overall library goals.
- Plan and coordinate project milestones and identifying project resources.
- Document and present project outcomes and learning.
- Spend time writing about and reflecting on their experience.
- Attend meetings and training sessions as scheduled.
- Complete reports, surveys, and other documentation as required.
- Support Summer Reading Program.
- Support library staff on a variety of activities and outreach to the community.
- Perform other related work as assigned by Supervisor.
- Perform other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.
- Contribute to a positive work environment.
- Maintain regular, predictable attendance and punctuality.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Basic arithmetic.
- English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
- Alpha/numeric sorting.
- Data entry.
- Modern office equipment
- Customer service principles and techniques (or ability to acquire listed knowledge during internship)
Ability to:
- Display teamwork and cooperation with co-workers, supervisors, and volunteers.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Display a professional manner that is welcoming and approachable. Respond courteously to requests and inquiries from the general public.
- Take direction, understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions.
- Convey a positive image of the library, the City of Forest Grove, its employees, and its services at all times.
- Operate a computer, and use the Internet to find information.
- Operate and navigate Microsoft Suite and Google Suite applications.
- Type at a speed necessary for successful job performance.
Education and Experience Guidelines
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education and Experience:
- Sufficient education to ensure the ability to read, write, alphabetize, count, add, and subtract.
- The position requires the recipient to be between 16-19 years of age, by June 1st 2025.
- Able to access reliable transportation to the Library, OR live close enough to bike/walk.

Environment: Incumbents work in a Library environment with extensive public contact and exposure to computer screens. Duties of this position require a willingness to occasionally work outdoors.
Mobility: Sufficient mobility to work in a library setting and operate office equipment; the ability to walk, stand, sit, bend, reach, kneel, and stoop for extended periods of time; finger dexterity to access enter and retrieve data using a computer keyboard and to operator office equipment; and the ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
Vision, Hearing and Communication: Vision sufficient to read small print on computer screens, printed documents, and shelves that are above and below eye level. Hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person and over the telephone.
