SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Supervisor of Salomon Farm Park, the Seasonal Animal Care Coordinator helps maintain the health and well-being of farm animals and the cleanliness of the living spaces. Responsibilities focus on daily care tasks, basic maintenance and assisting with farm programs. This position requires reliability and attention to detail to support the daily well-being of the animals throughout the season. The requirements listed below are representative samples of the knowledge, skills, and / or ability required. The incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in conducting day-to-day operations. All work duties and activities must be performed in accordance with the City safety rules and operating regulations, policies and procedures as well as federal, state, and local regulations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the ability to interact with the public, City incumbents, and outside agencies with patience, tact, respect, and professionalism and the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Clean and maintain animal pens, pastures, and shelter areas;
- Feed and provide fresh water to farm animals;
- Monitor animals for signs of illness or injury and report concerns;
- Assist with basic grooming and general animal care tasks;
- Provide enrichment activities and safe handling of animals;
- Help rotate and move animals as assigned;
- Stock and organize animal feed, bedding and supplies;
- Follow safety protocols for working with animals and equipment;
- Assist in farm-related programs and public interactions, as assigned;
- Support seasonal farm events and general farm upkeep;
- Follows protocol in the proper containment and disposal of bio-hazardous waste and contaminants;
- Assist with health checks as assigned;
- Operates hand tools, such as but not limited to, hammers, screwdrivers, clamps, saws;
- Operates power tools such as but not limited to, belt sander, chainsaw, circular saw, nail gun, drills;
- Operates farm equipment and vehicles, such as tractors, skid-steer, irrigation equipment, hay bines, balers, post hole drivers, other farm equipment and utility vehicles as assigned;
- Assist with watering of pastures;
- Assist with mowing and trimming;
- Maintains parking lots, drives, walking paths, sidewalks and other areas as assigned;
- Operates equipment and vehicles in a safe manner;
- Assist with other Park Operations and events, as assigned, including, but not limited to general cleaning, landscaping, customer service, major Salomon events, programs, rentals, farm fields, and sunflower operation and sales;
- Operates within the policies and guidelines of the City of Fort Wayne and the FWPRD;
- Follows all City of Fort Wayne and Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation money handling procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or G.E.D
- Two years’ experience in related field, preferred
OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and/or ABILITIES
- Experience with animal care is preferred;
- Communicates effectively both orally and in writing;
- Knowledge of Parks & Recreation facilities and functions;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with managers and operating employees of the Parks & Recreation Department and the general public;
- Ability to work within a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays as needed;
- Works in harmony with fellow works and maintains good relations with park patrons;
- Ability to understand oral and written instructions;
- Maintains a neat personal appearance.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Contacts occur with the supervisor, departmental associates and the general public to give and receive factual information about the work.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but involved written and oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
- Maintains a valid Indiana Driver's License for use of city vehicle;
- Certified in First Aid and Adult, infant/Child CPR;
