Incorporated in 1946, Galt is a growing community with approximately 26,000 residents located approximately 20 miles south of Sacramento along Highway 99. The City is led by five elected council members, the Mayor being appointed.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The City is looking for a proactive individual who enjoys working outdoors and interacting with the public. The ideal candidate will be able to effectively and courteously educate residents on efficient watering practices, manage water conservation programs, monitor water waste within the City, and enforce the Water Conservation Ordinance when needed. This position requires significant walking.
Will work approximately 20 - 24 hrs. per week. Weekend work may be required, depending on assignment
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direction from the Public Works Director and his/her designee.
Example of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Respond to citizen complaints regarding water wasting violations; investigate and resolve problems, provide water conservation information to public by phone and in person regarding code regulations.
- Conduct field reviews and investigate possible wasting water violations; contact responsible persons in person; issue citations; perform follow-up field review to be assured that remedial action has been taken.
- Develop, monitor, and implement water conservation awareness program, and other related programs in classroom settings or to other organizations/groups, as requested.
- Compile information and prepare correspondence and staff reports on a variety of water conservation matters and attend meetings as required by the Department Head.
- Develop and maintain on-going community contacts with local businesses, social service agencies, and community groups; serve as a community resource for water related issues.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- Laws, regulations and procedures related to wasting water enforcement.
- Investigation principles and practices.
- Training in horticulture, agriculture, and/or nursery operations is desirable.
- Basic knowledge of water conservation programs.
Ability to:
- Arrive at assigned place of work on time in a dependable manner; work varied hours, including weekends, holidays, early morning and late evening.
- Work independently, set goals and meet established deadlines.
- Learn and explain appropriate City water conservation and enforcement codes and ordinances.
- Express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Read and interpret written instructions and reset irrigation timers.
- Work as team member with other divisions of the Public Works Department and other City Departments.
- Deal courteously and firmly with the public as needed.
- Effectively deal with irate persons, confrontational situations, and other adverse situations.
- Learn to use radios, personal computers, and other office equipment.
- Establish and maintain cooperative relations with those contacted in the course of work, including other departments, outside agencies and the general public.
- Ability to speak Spanish is desirable.
Drive a standard vehicle to get to desired locations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required experience, knowledge and abilities, is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and a minimum one (1) year of active code enforcement experience involving a high degree of public contact, investigative or inspection skills, or any combination thereof.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATES:
Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Ability to speak in audible tones so others may understand clearly in normal conversations and on the telephone; Ability to hear normal speech and other audible events, even in combination with other environmental noise; Mental acuity to perform the essential functions of this position in an accurate, timely fashion; to make good judgements and decisions; and to evaluate the results of decisions and judgements. Able to lift, bend, stoop, walk on uneven terrain, reach overhead, push, pull, squat, twist, and turn; Depending on the weather, work outdoors in the heat, cold, dust and sun glare.
2025 - Maximum City Medical Contribution
City pays $158 towards the medical premium. Employee pays the remaining medical premium.
Retirement Plan
The City's retirement program through the California Public Employee's Retirement System (“CalPERS”) is available to employees as provided in the contract between the City and PERS and in Government Code Section 20300, et. seq.
Social Security Program
The City participates in the Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) for full time and part-time employees. The FICA tax consists of both Social Security and Medicare taxes, which are paid both by the employee and the City of Galt. Employees pay half through payroll deduction and the City of Galt pays the other half totaling fifteen and three tenths percent (15.3%.)
