JOB POSTING:
SEASONAL POLICE CADET

The City of Grandville seeks qualified individuals to fill the position of Seasonal Police Cadet. Responsibilities include but are not limited to assisting the Grandville community by working with citizens to address neighborhood problems related to crime and disorder, provide a visible presence in the City parks, bicycle paths, and business corridors, act as the eyes and ears of the department, and assist in the department’s community outreach programs.

Minimum Qualifications include: minimum age of 17, proof of High School graduation or equivalent, admitted to an institution of higher learning, valid Michigan driver’s license, meet MCOLES requirements (including no felony or domestic assault convictions), possess good moral character as defined by MCOLES standards, 20/20 corrected vision in both eyes and the absence of color blindness.

Preferred Skills: Our preferred candidate is actively enrolled in a Criminal Justice or Law Enforcement degree program.

A qualified candidate will be classified as a seasonal employee with a rate of pay of $15.50/hour and no additional benefits. Cadets will be working 28 hours per week on a flexible schedule, with the majority of working hours being M-F, between the hours of 8:00 am – 6:00 pm.

Job Title: Police Cadet
Department: Police
Immediate Supervisor: Senior Officer, Sergeants, Deputy Chief of Police, Chief of Police

General Summary:
The primary function of every City of Grandville employee is to serve the residents, vendors, and patrons of Grandville.

Under the direction of supervisors, The Police Cadet will assist the Grandville community by working with the citizens to address neighborhood problems related to crime and disorder.

Essential Job Functions:

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions.

1. Climb over obstacles; climb through openings; jump down elevated surfaces; jump over obstacles, ditches and streams; and crawl in confined areas to pursue, search, investigate, and/or rescue.

2. Communicate effectively over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications.

3. Effectively communicate verbally by listening to people and by giving information, directions, and commands.

4. Conduct visual and audio surveillance for extended periods of time.
5. Engage in bicycle patrol for the duration of their shifts.
6. Exercise independent judgment within legal guidelines.
7. Manage interpersonal conflicts to maintain order.
8. Operate vehicles during both the day and occasionally at night in congested traffic and in unsafe road conditions and environmental conditions such as fog, smoke, rain.
9. Perform cadet functions during flexible hours with the majority of work conducted between the hours of 8:00 am – 6:00 pm, M-F.
10. Perform tasks which require lifting, carrying, or dragging people or heavy objects, such as barricades and related traffic safety and patrol equipment. performing general patrol functions.
11. Prepare legible handwritten and/or typed investigative and other reports using appropriate grammar, symbols, and mathematical computations, which are accurate and complete.

12. Read and comprehend rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and the law for purposes of ensuring appropriate cadet behavior/response and performing activities involving the public.

13. Provide accurate and truthful testimony in both criminal and civil proceedings.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and minimum qualifications necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

  • Citizen of the United States.
  • Minimum age of Seventeen (17).
  • Proof of High School graduation or General Educational Development (GED) Certificate
  • Admitted to an institution of higher learning
  • Valid State of Michigan Driver’s License, satisfactory driving record, and the ability to maintain one throughout employment
  • Meet MCOLES requirements, including no Felony or Domestic Assault Convictions.
  • Possess good moral character as defined by MCOLES standards.
  • 20/20 Corrected vision in both eyes and the absence of color blindness.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, run, bend crouch, hear, talk, write, use a computer, ride a bicycle, and drive a car. The employee must occasionally lift heavy objects such as barricades and related traffic safety and patrol equipment, and use equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee generally works both indoors and outdoors, on a bicycle or in a vehicle during the hours of both daylight and darkness. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet, humid conditions; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme heat or cold; risk of electrical shock; vibration; and moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate, and can be loud or very loud while working in the field.

Classification/Hours

This is a seasonal, non-exempt position with no benefits. The regular work week is 28 hours, M-F with the possibility of an occasional weekend shift.
