This job is funded by a Public Health Excellence (PHE) Grant, which is designed to support the Special Commission on Local and Regional Public Health. The Valley Health Regional Collaborative (VHRC) consists of the following municipalities: Greenfield (lead agency), Montague, Deerfield, Sunderland, Shutesbury, and Leverett.
The Health Inspector will be stationed at a town that is yet to be determined and will rotate between the collaborative for coverage, and will work collaboratively with other personnel at all locations within the VHRC. The Greenfield Health Director and the Valley Steering Committee (the shared public health services board) will oversee the Health Inspector. The position calls for flexibility of traveling within the collaborative. This role will rotate for coverage of the jurisdiction that is in need and will have a focus on one jurisdiction site.
The Health Inspector's role is to conduct inspections of various establishments listed below to ensure compliance with local and state codes. The establishments include restaurants, retail food establishments, temporary food establishments, mobile food units, school cafeterias, church kitchens, hotels, motels, bed-and-breakfast establishments, Airbnb’s, recreational camps, tanning establishments, body art establishments, public and semi-public swimming pools, and indoor pools and spas. The Health Inspector must also act to eliminate nuisances, unsanitary conditions, sources of filth, and air pollution, as well as respond to general complaints, housing issues, and nuisances. Additionally, they must issue enforcement orders, send letters for follow-up if required, and conduct re-inspections.
To be eligible for this role, a high school diploma or equivalent is required, and an associate’s degree in science or public health is preferred. The Health Inspector must obtain a registered Sanitarian License within six years of hire, complete the foundations course within 18 months of hire, hold a valid class D driver's license with an acceptable driving record, and have training for LPHI. Moreover, they must be a certified Lead Inspector, Serve-Safe certified, Title V certified, and a Certified Pool Operator, all within one year of hire.
