What are the responsibilities and job description for the Health Inspector position at City of Springfield?
Responsible performing inspections of food establishments, swimming in pools or ponds, outdoor events, and other buildings, ensuring compliance with health and safety codes. This position, working under general supervision of the Environmental Health Director, will also investigate environmental complaints, educate the public on health regulations, and maintain inspection records. No supervision is exercised other employees.
- Conduct regular inspections of food establishments, schools, swimming in pools or ponds, outdoor events, and other facilities
- Investigate environmental health complaints (water, sanitation, food handling, etc.)
- Larvicides private and public sites with standing water to inhibit growth of mosquito larvae, and Obtains water samples from area swimming ponds and brings to lab for testing
- Ensure identified violations are promptly addressed
- Document all inspections and complaints
- Input and manage a health data system
- Participate in training and continuing education
- Contribute to reviewing, learning, and enforcing new regulations
- Deals effectively with the public in-person and/or over the phone
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Environmental Health Director
- Makes sound judgments about violations and their severity
- Ability to enforce regulations firmly and tactfully
- Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with the public and community leaders
- Knowledge of enforcement tools and educational activities for public health and safety
- Ability to prepare clear and concise reports
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and written skills
- Ability to prioritize work and handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and resolve problems effectively in a timely manner
- Graduation from a 4-year college or university, including or supplemented by courses related to food safety, environmental health, or sanitation.
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in related field.
- Ability to receive the below certifications within 12 months of initial employment.
- Certified Food Protection Manager
- Food Allergy Awareness
- Certified Pool and Spa Operator
- FEMA Incident Command System and NIMS trainings
