Internship Overview
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.Program Duration: June 2, 2025 - August 8, 2025
Rate of Pay:
Undergraduate Students: $16.24 per hourGraduate Students: $20.58 per hour
Internships are non-exempt positions. Summer interns will not work more than forty (40) hours in an administrative work week.
As an Engineering Intern, you will:
- Assist Civil and Senior Civil Engineers with coordination tasks involving contractors and consultants.
- Review engineering plans and specifications to ensure compliance with city standards.
- Conduct construction site visits to observe project progress and address any concerns.
- Collaborate with Operations Crews and Staff to understand day-to-day activities and challenges.
- Participate in meetings with residents to address their concerns and project-related inquiries.
- Prepare reports for management as needed.
- Learn about city-specific projects like the dredging program, understanding its purpose, qualifications, and execution criteria.
- Explore programs such as Community Rating System (CRS) and MS4 as well as other drainage/infrastructural projects.
You will gain experience In:
- Project Development: Learn all phases of project management, including design development milestones (30%, 60%, 90%, and Final).
- Contract Types and Management: Identify various types of contracts and their applications in municipal projects.
- Preliminary Project Management: Gain insight into critical processes such as pre-bid meetings, pre-construction meetings, Notice-to-Proceed Letters, and handling retainage and invoices.
- Community Engagement: Develop skills in effective communication with residents and stakeholders to address project concerns.
Department Final Project: Interns will work on a department-specific project designed to improve or enhance a City service. This project will be presented at a culminating ceremony attended by City leaders, highlighting the intern’s contributions and insights gained throughout the program.
RequirementsCurrent Student, Recent Graduate or Graduate Student: Must be a rising junior, rising senior, recent graduate (2024 or 2025) or a graduate student, majoring in Engineering or a related field from an accredited college/university. Transcripts are required as a supplement to this application.
GPA: 3.0 or higher.
