OBJECTIVE:
Under general supervision and guidance of the Recreation Director and guidance of the Recreation Supervisor and Recreation Programmers, the Recreation Intern is responsible for assisting with program and event coordination, execution and supervision in addition to general Division office assistance. This position is for eligible students in an approved bachelor’s degree internship program focused on Recreation Administration, Sports Management or related field.

RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to: Recreation Director
Works with seasonal employees on a regular basis and communicates with other City employees, professional staff, customers and the general public.
- Recreation Programming: Attend staff and other relevant meetings; Plan, coordinate, schedule, implement and supervise recreation programs and events; Shadow and and/or fill in for various seasonal positions as needed; Complete program surveys and evaluations.
- Marketing & Promotion: Design, create and distribute various publicity materials; Use of social media marketing; Obtain sponsorships/donations; Capture photographs of participants and activities at recreation programs and facilities; Represent Division at promotional events.
- Administration: Assist with office coverage, including proper phone protocol, participant registrations, facility bookings, equipment rental program oversight, scholarship program tracking, record keeping and preparing reports.
- Facility Operations & Maintenance: Review operational manuals and maintenance procedures; Shadow and assist with maintenance of facilities; Collect beach water samples, Assist with program and facility supervision.
- Budgeting & Fiscal Management: Learn budgetary procedures; assist with employee payroll and timecard management; purchase supplies and distribute materials within given budgets.
- Personnel Supervision & Management: Assist with hiring and evaluation of employees; Solicit and help with volunteer recruitment and management; Assist with staff training sessions; Responsible for proper documentation of incidents and injuries; Understand policies and procedures.
- Major Project: Plan and execute a major project. This project is determined together with student and supervisor input.
- General Duties: Acts as a professional staff member; participates in facility orientations; familiarization of city policies and procedures; other related duties as assigned.
Education, Certifications and Experience:
1. Must be 18 years of age or older.
2.Current Child and Adult CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications or willing to obtain.
3. Must be currently enrolled in an approved bachelor’ s degree university internship program.
For successful performance in this position, the incumbent will need to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Ability to:
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as required.
- Ability to follow City/Division/ policies, work independently and make sound decisions.
- Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees, program participants, facility users and the general public.
- Ability to comply with all safety policies, practices and procedures
- Ability to maintain positive behavior and a calm and professional demeanor
- Posses or ability to obtain a valid State of Wisconsin driver’s license.
Equipment used in this position includes but is not limited to: Personal Computer; Recreation Based Software; Copy Machine; Telephone.
PHYSICAL FACTORS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by any employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
1.Position works general indoor office setting; along with the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
2.Working conditions involve occasional exposure to dirt, dust, and moisture.
3.Perform basic activities, which may include, but not limited to lifting, stooping, semi-reaching, to full-reach overhead, crouching, kneeling, bending, twisting, and turning.
4.Must be able to sit or stand and move for long periods of time
5.Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
6.See and observe all sections of an assigned area of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodation.
7. Ability to drive an 11-passenger van.
