Full-time position available with the Public Works Department, Major Capital Projects Division located at 414 E. 12th Street

Salary Range: $6,489-$9,734/month

Normal Work Days/Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. *Telework schedule available for 12 hours a week after 6-month probationary period completed

Responsibilities

  • Performs administrative and supervisory professional engineering work directing major civil engineering projects involving the planning, design, funding, development, construction, and/or renovation of public work infrastructure including roadways, sidewalks, traffic signals, trails, drainage, bridges, utilities, and/or related surface transportation assets.
  • Performs administrative and technical responsibility for completion of major tasks associated with engineering design work.
  • Consults frequently with department heads, consultants, contractors and others concerned with specific projects is required in the design, review of plans and specifications and inspection of construction work for compliance with prescribed engineering criteria.
  • Receives assignments from the City Engineer and is expected to exercise broad independent judgment to resolve technical problems.
  • Utilizes frequent coordination and collaboration with City Council, Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), Mid-American Regional Council (MARC), developers, Economic Development Corporation (TIFs), Counties, railroads, local municipal governments and regional no-profit organizations.
  • Speaks publicly in front of City Council, neighborhood groups, and general public.
  • Performs QA/QC of construction plans, utility coordination, manages design consultant contracts for design and studies.
  • Assists in determining estimated costs of possible future City projects based on resident requests in preparation for the City's annual budget cycle.
  • Writes requests for proposals for new projects once funding is provided.
  • Aids in the application for and management of grant funds.
  • Exercises good judgment to resolve technical problems, manage projects, and provide data for asset risk assessment criteria.
  • Interprets and applies City ordinances, state and federal regulations, specifications, and related standards to projects.
  • Assists other staff as requested when time-critical issues may arise.
  • Depending on qualifications and experience, this position may be assigned additional duties related to utilities, bridges, transportation, or general engineering and project management and may supervise staff engineers.

Qualifications

REQUIRES two (2) years progressively responsible experience as a Registered Engineer. Within 6 months of hire date, must be registered as a Professional Engineer with Missouri Board for Architects, Professional Engineers, Professional Land Surveyors, and Professional Landscape Architects. Must pass a preemployment drug screen as prescribed by the City.

Positions requiring a high school diploma/GED certificate must be obtained from a school/program accredited by the Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.

The minimum education requirement for positions that allow for experience equivalency for an accredited degree is a high school diploma. Unless otherwise specified, an accredited degree must be obtained from a college or university listed with the U.S. Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.

For positions with a salary grade of EX6 or higher that require an accredited degree, qualifying professional experience must be obtained AFTER the accredited degree is obtained.

Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal history/background check is required for all positions. Some positions require a post offer drug screen and/or physical.

If appointed, non-residents must obtain residency inside Kansas City, Missouri's city limits within nine months.
