Under the general supervision of the horticulturist or field supervisor, assist with seasonal operations of propagation and care of plants and flowers as well as the maintenance of the greenhouses and floral gardens in the Parks Department. This position also performs a variety of related tasks including seeding, planting, watering, and fertilizing of plants and flower beds.

This position is first shift, Monday through Friday (weather and other conditions permitting).  This position will also require some weekend hours on a regular or occasional basis and extended hours during planting season.  This is strictly seasonal employment.

Please note that City employees (including seasonal employees) may only be employed in one classification at any one given time. 
  • Maintains public flower beds and gardens on all City properties, including such tasks as planting, dead heading, weeding, trimming, edging, raking, digging, etc.
  • Monitors plants in the field for insect infestations of plant material.
  • Installs plant material in beds and gardens according to developed design.
  • Assists with removal of all plant material within all City gardens.
  • Answers inquiries from the general public.
  • Operates related equipment of the field.
  • May assist in the maintenance and care of parks and boulevards, performing various Construction & Maintenance Worker duties such as painting, hauling, mowing, waste collection, special events work, playground installation, and other related tasks as needed.
  • Ability to work effectively with employees and the general public with good communication skills.
General Requirements:
  • Must be age 18 or older.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a good driving record.
  • If offered employment, must pass pre-employment drug screen.
Knowledge, Abilities & Skills Required:
  • Knowledge of occupational safety rules and practices.
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment used in general maintenance.
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools, motor vehicles and light truck.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Ability to perform strenuous work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to handle reasonably necessary stress.
Environmental Requirements:
  • Work is done mainly outdoors. Tasks may require frequent exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
  • Work boots and apparel required. 
Physical Requirements:
  • Tasks involve the regular, and at times sustained, performance of working over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, and lifting or carrying moderately heavy (20-50 pound) items and occasionally very heavy (100 pounds or over) items; or may involve operation of gasoline, electric or other powered machinery.
  • Tasks may also involve the frequent use of coordination skills in performing a variety of tasks with the full range of hand tools and shop equipment.
Sensory Requirements:
  • Tasks requires perception and discrimination in the sensory areas of: visual, color, sound, odor, depth, and texture.
